Regulatory Authorities

The pharmaceutical market in Saudi Arabia is controlled by the government and the private sector and is mainly regulated by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) in cooperation with the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Established in 2003, the SFDA regulates the drug supply chain, the registration, sale, and pricing of all pharmaceutical products, as well as the licensing, inspection, and suspension of manufacturers who do not meet the country’s regulatory requirements.

This mandate requires compliance with strict regulations to enable an accurate market analysis to balance drug supply and demand.

In addition, the SFDA has partnered with the Department of Health to establish a chain of custody from the manufacturer to the point of sale at a local pharmacy and has improved its infrastructure to facilitate the import, manufacture, and distribution of medicines.

Conclusion

Protecting local drug manufacturers by preventing the import, or even raising the tax rate, of similar therapies already manufactured in the country would force international approval of such drugs into the Saudi market.

Therefore, it will encourage local manufacturing by forming joint ventures (ie, associations of international domestic companies) rather than foreign-made medicines competing with local ones.
