History of the Pharmaceutical Sector in Nepal
Nepal was founded in 1990 AD by pharmaceutical entrepreneurs to facilitate, enhance and improve the service of pharmaceutical companies in coordination with various government agencies, the medical profession, and pharmaceutical trading houses.
The historical event of pharmacy development began during the ancient ruler of Lichchhavi Amshu Berma, dating back to 605620 AD. when an Ayurvedic hospital was established.
Allopathic medicines were introduced to Nepal in 1816 AD after the Suguali Treaty and the establishment of a British residency in Nepal.
Manufacture of allopathic medicines began in the private sector in 1969 and the government company Royal Drug Limited was incorporated in 1972 formerly subordinate to the Department of Forest and Soil Conservation and transferred to the Department of Health and Population
Nepal enacted the Medicines Act 1978 (2035 BS) to prohibit and regulate and control the misuse or abuse of medicines and false or misleading information regarding the effectiveness and use of medicines.
Production, marketing, distribution, export, import, storage, and use of such drugs are unsafe, effective and of standard quality for public use.
To implement and comply with the purpose and objectives of the Drugs Act of 1978 and various regulations thereunder.
Today it has 50 pharmaceutical companies as its members, controlling 40% of the Nepalese pharmaceutical market share, 32 of which are WHO-GMP certified and others are in the process of doing so.
APPON has been striving towards the goal of manufacturing safe, effective and affordable high-quality products for the Nepalese healthcare sector since the day it was founded. To promote the Nepalese pharmaceutical industry in the world market, it also supports export.
It also supports the pharmaceutical industry in technical and technological advancement, which ultimately contributes to the development of the Nepal healthcare segment.
The pharmaceutical industry thrived during the wet conflict in Nepal since the early 1990s. Today, the Nepalese industries set their efforts and six of them had already taken “Certificate of Pharmaceutical Products (Copp) for the export of some of their products in the international market.
