The pharmaceutical industry in Hungary
Hungary has a long tradition in the pharmaceutical industry, but its stimulating effect on the economy appears to be limited.
Hungarians are proud of their chemical and pharmaceutical industries, which are over a hundred years old, and like to refer to the Hungarian roots of the Nobel Prize winners in chemistry, Zsigmondy, Hevesy, Pollányi, and Oláh. A lot has happened since the end of World War II.
The production and export of pharmaceuticals increased significantly in the 1950s and 1960s, and numerous license agreements were concluded with Western pharmaceutical manufacturers in the 1970s.
Budapest-based Gedeon Richter is the flagship manufacturer of the Hungarian pharmaceutical industry.
The company was founded in 1901 by pharmacist Gedeon Richter and is now a global player. Medicines, active ingredients, and intermediate products are manufactured and produced, and marketed at the two locations in Hungary and factories in other countries.
Also, the portfolio includes almost a hundred pharmaceutical products. The knowledge in steroid chemistry accumulated over many years has enabled the company to become one of the world’s leading players in the market for gynecological drugs.
The most recent events have shown that in addition to cutting-edge research, the industry also uses the most modern production technology. Gedeon Richter invested more than € 35 million in new production facilities, € 5 million of which in process automation. Contracts for three projects to automate steroid production at Dorog have been awarded to ABB.
According to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (HCSO), the number of companies in the pharmaceutical industry has increased in recent years.
In 2018, a total of 97 companies were active in the pharmaceutical industry in Hungary. Similarly, the number of employees in the industry rose from 18,089 to 19,185, an increase of 6% in three years. In 2016, the industry’s turnover was 1,010,207,874 (HUF thousand), which grew by 3 percent to 1,039,355,791 (HUF thousand).
The output value of the industry has grown in recent years. In 2016 this value increased from 905,329,395 (HUF thousand), then in 2018 to 989,685,752 (HUF thousand) The total expenditure of RandD increased by about 30% from 2017 to 2018.
Pharmaceuticals Retail in Hungary
Retail pharmacies may have the right to operate in the form of a public pharmacy, a pharmacy branch, and a medicine cabinet.
The most important laws governing trade in medicines can be found in English on the website of Országos Gyógyszerészeti és Élelmezésegészségügyi Intézet (National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition OGYÉI). In 2020, there are 2292 public pharmacies in Hungary.
According to the HCSO data, the number of pharmacies has stagnated since 2012, there was no major decrease or increase.
In 2012, there were 2398 and in 2019 there were 2359 pharmacies in Hungary. Institutional pharmacies are part of hospitals and provide medical care for people in need of care who are in certain departments of the hospital are looked after. In-house pharmacies are allowed to operate in settlements in which neither a public pharmacy nor a branch is active.
An in-house pharmacy inventory includes certain medically prescribed drugs and prescriptions that are available from a public pharmacy.
In conclusion, the pharmaceutical industry in Hungary keeps developing day in, and day out, as more exports seem to be going on than imports. Also, the industry keeps making a great impact worldwide, not just locally.
