Best 40 Pharmaceutical companies in Vietnam

chibueze uchegbu | March 20th, 2023

Pharmaceutical companies in Vietnam are among the fastest-growing industries in Asia and the world at large.

Demand for high-quality medicines has been catalyzed by high economic growth, rising per capita income, and an aging population.

While the Vietnamese government encourages the domestic pharmaceutical industry, its options are limited to generics, further constrained by Vietnam’s accession to the World Trade Organization (joined in 2007), recognition and enforcement of international patent law, and a lack of research and innovation capacity.

With the global economic disruptions caused by COVID19 and ongoing trade uncertainties with China, emerging economies such as Vietnam offer a viable option to diversify and hedge operations while providing opportunities for long-term sustainable growth for foreign multinational corporations (MNCs).

Vietnam is a fast-growing economy in Asia with a very large population. Although the Vietnamese population is still expanding (about 1.1% on average over the period 2000-2015), the Vietnamese population is expected to enter the aging phase at a very high rate.

The rapid expansion of the urban middle class and the proportion of older people have dramatically increased the demand for health goods, especially pharmaceuticals.

Since the early 1990s, the government has addressed the needs of the growing demand for healthcare. Formulation of a set of measures to promote the development of the pharmaceutical industry.

However, the implementation of this policy does not appear to have been entirely efficient as the country still has to import up to 90% of its pharmaceutical consumption.

This document aims to examine the development of the pharmaceutical industry in the years 1990-to 2015 and to identify several weaknesses in government support for the industry.

Future developments on how the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry could increase its stake in the industry will also be discussed.

Vietnam’s Pharmaceutical market

Despite the rapid growth, Vietnam’s manufacturing capacity can only meet 53% of domestic pharmaceutical demand.

In 2018, Vietnam spent nearly $2.8 billion on importing medicines. In 2019, this expense increased by 10%. Vietnam is also heavily dependent on imported pharmaceutical materials, mainly from China with more than 60% of the demand.

According to the Vietnam Medicines Administration, as of May 2019, there were about 180 pharmaceutical manufacturing companies and 224 domestic manufacturing sites in Vietnam that adhered to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards.

National companies mainly produce simple dosage forms, functional foods, and generics (drugs whose exclusive protection has expired).

Market research firm IBM said the size of Vietnam’s pharmaceutical industry could reach $7.7 billion in 2021 and $16.1 billion in 2026. Market research firm IMS Health also predicts that per capita spending on medicines in Vietnam will rise to US$50 per person in 2020.

In addition, many large pharmaceutical manufacturing companies such as Hau Giang Pharmaceutical, Bidiphar, Imexpharm, and Pymepharco have invested in factory modernization, which they promise to make progress in the development of new national pharmaceutical products and improve competitiveness against imported products.

The General Statistical Office predicts that the number of Vietnamese aged 65 and over will reach 7.4 million in 2020, accounting for nearly 7.9% of the country’s total population and  18.1% in 2049.

According to a report by the Vietnam Social Insurance Agency,  only 60% of Vietnam’s population had health insurance in 2010, while this figure was 90% in 2019.

Another driving force for the pharmaceutical industry is rapid urbanization. The urbanized population of Vietnam will reach 36.2 million by the end of 2020, up from 33.6% in 2015 to 36.8%.

However, this densely scientific industry demands skilled, specialized, and qualified professionals with technical training to handle sensitive pharmaceutical operations.

In recent years, the pharmaceutical sector has evolved beyond its conventional practices, rapidly adopting modern technologies and pharmacological innovations.

The sector is attracting skilled professionals from diverse academic backgrounds to handle marketing, technology acquisition, customer service, and other operations.

Skills You Need To Work in The Pharmaceutical Industry

Keep reading to explore crucial skills that will help you land lucrative opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry.

Core Academic Specializations

Are you aspiring to become a pharmacologist, pharmacist, or clinical research assistant? Or perhaps, your ambitions soar higher, drawing you towards prestigious roles like a research scientist, clinical researcher, or analytical chemist?

Either way, you will have to pursue academic specializations to train yourself for the career path you aspire to achieve.

Suppose you want to serve as a pharmacologist or pharmacist, working towards a private business in a local community. In that case, it’s wise to pursue a pharmacology degree to develop core competencies in handling medications.

Typically, a pharmacology degree will introduce you to different medications, their chemical compositions, biological effects, and clinical uses. Pharmacologists need in-depth training in biological systems, pharmaceutical interactions, clinical trials, drug regulation, and chemical properties.

The academic pathways to becoming a clinical researcher, scientist, or epidemiologist are different, and specializations will help unlock lucrative career advancement opportunities.

Interestingly, the pharmaceutical sector doesn’t merely need scientists, chemists, and researchers. It requires specialized and skilled marketers, publicists, relations managers, communication specialists, CEOs, CFOs, and promising corporate talent.

Qualified professionals vying to secure high-paying positions in the pharmaceutical industry have much to gain by pursuing CfPIE training courses to develop core competencies.

The Center for Professional Innovation & Education (CfPIE) offers technical training in various spheres, including Biotech, cosmetics, medical devices, clinical writing, and pharmaceutical operations.

These certifications will elevate your skillset and marketability with industry-relevant training to attract recruiters.

Legal Understanding & Regulatory Prowess

The pharmaceutical industry is a strictly regulated sector, and an acute understanding of legal matters is of the utmost significance.

All pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers, pharmacies, and licensed professionals must comply with the regulations mandated by public health agencies and regulatory bodies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Failure to comply with federal regulations, industry guidelines, and applicable laws can result in hefty penalties and fines, and professionals can lose their licensure.

These regulations are applicable to every process, from clinical research and drug manufacturing to clinical trials and retail. Understanding the regulatory laws and ensuring legal compliance is imperative in the pharmaceutical sector.

Effective Communication Skills

Are you a patient listener and soothing communicator? Effective communication skills are vital, whether you’re vying for a sales job in a pharmacy or training as a clinical researcher. Professionals must develop effective listening and speaking skills and the ability to process feedback constructively.

Pharmacologists and pharmacists engage with customers regularly and, therefore, need robust communication skills to develop a thriving clientele.

Problem-Solving Skills

What will you do if a clinical trial goes wrong and the participants start exhibiting severe reactions to the drug? How will you respond to scores of customers anxious to buy a medicine that the manufacturer has discontinued? Are you a strategic thinker and a crafty problem solver?

The pharmaceutical industry can be imagined as a massive, worldwide problem-solving machine that fights diseases by formulating pharmacological responses. Problem-solving skills are imperative, regardless of which role you wish to perform in this sector.

Every professional vying to secure a rewarding pharmaceutical profession, from marketers and publicists to pharmacists and clinical researchers, need creative problem-solving abilities.

Final Thoughts

The pharmaceutical industry is ripe with extrinsically and intrinsically rewarding opportunities for dedicated and hard-working professionals.

What do you know about the pharmaceutical companies in Vermont? Today, we unravel the essentials you need to know.

More than 560 clinical trials of new medicines have been conducted by pharmaceutical companies in Vermont in collaboration with the state’s university medical school, clinical research centers, and hospitals (1999 to present).

365 of the more than 560 clinical trials target the six most debilitating chronic diseases in Vermont: asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental illnesses, and stroke.

Overview

Vermont is dedicated to good health for people, the environment, and institutions, which include schools, colleges and universities, businesses, and cities and communities.

The active research activity of pharmaceutical companies in Vermont—from Chittenden County to White River Junction, from Brattleboro to Bennington—is one significant health care effort that does not receive the attention it deserves.

Vermont Biosciences Alliance includes many of these institutions. Working frequently in collaboration with the NIH and the majority of major pharmaceutical companies, the research efforts contribute to the development of life-saving drugs, devices, and treatments.

A drug or a medical device cannot be developed by a single researcher or institution. Capital, talent, drive, initiative, and teamwork are all required.

Facts about pharmaceutical companies in Vermont

Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont have targeted disease wisely—well over half of the medications clinically tested in the state have targeted the nation’s most debilitating chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma.

Nearly half of those trials are still recruiting patients. These collaborations have occurred in Burlington with researchers from the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center.

  • Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont are currently conducting or have completed over 560 clinical trials of new medicines in collaboration with the state’s university medical school, clinical research centers, and hospitals (1999 to present).
  • 365 of the more than 560 clinical trials target the six most debilitating chronic diseases in the United States: asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental illnesses, and stroke.
  • Pharmaceutical companies have provided jobs, tax revenue, and research funding to Vermont.
  • According to a study conducted by BattelleTechnology Partnership Practice, the industry supported nearly 1,500 jobs in the state in 2011.
  • Wages and benefits for employees supported by the pharmaceutical sector resulted in approximately $11 million in federal taxation and $2 million in state and local taxes.
  • Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont contributed $267 million in economic activity to the state two years ago, including direct economic output, output from vendors and suppliers, and output generated by the purchasing power of its workforce.
  • Life sciences researchers, management executives, office and administrative support workers, production workers, engineers, architects, computer and math experts, and sales representatives are among the company employees in Vermont.
  • Pharmaceutical companies also supported the jobs of their vendors and suppliers, such as construction and information technology firms. Employees of pharmaceutical companies in Vermont also contribute to the success of local restaurants, daycare centers, and other community businesses.

Concerning Clinical Trials

  • Clinical trials are used in the development of new medicines to demonstrate therapeutic safety and effectiveness and to compile the evidence required for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve treatments.
  • Clinical trials for new drugs are conducted in three stages, accounting for an average of seven of the ten to fifteen years it takes to bring a new drug from development to patients.
  • Clinical trials for a specific drug or treatment entail thousands of volunteer patient participants and the collection of tens of thousands of pages of technical and scientific data.
  • Clinical trials account for 45 to 75 percent of the average $1.2 billion costs of developing a new cutting-edge biotechnology medicine.
  • The trials provide another potential therapeutic option for patients. Clinical tests may provide a new avenue of care for some chronic disease patients who are still looking for the best medicines for them.
  • Some trials are also carried out to compare existing treatments, while others are carried out to determine whether a drug is appropriate for a specific patient population, such as children.
  • Others are being conducted to find ways to make currently approved drugs more effective, easier to use, and with fewer side effects. An Institutional Review Board (IRB), an independent committee of physicians, statisticians, local community advocates, and others, must review and approve all clinical trials to ensure that they are conducted ethically and that patient rights are protected.
  • Clinical trial progress reports must be submitted to the FDA and IRB at least once a year.
  • All facilities that conduct or support biomedical research involving patients must follow federal regulations and have an IRB.

New Generation Medicines in the Works

Some of the drugs tested in Vermont are cutting-edge pharmaceutical drugs. Today, pharmaceutical companies in the United States are using biotechnology to develop hundreds of new medications and vaccines.

Vermont is one of the states conducting this research and development. Biotechnology is creating new ways to not only treat disease more effectively but also to predict and even prevent it.

Biotechnology medicines are created through biological processes that use living cells or organisms, as opposed to traditional chemical synthesis, which has been the mainstay of pharmaceutical development for decades. Novel treatments employ a variety of novel approaches to disease treatment.

A monoclonal antibody, for example, is a laboratory-created version of a naturally occurring immune system protein that binds to and neutralizes foreign invaders. Interferons are proteins that inhibit a cell’s ability to reproduce.

Meanwhile, antisense drugs are medications that disrupt the communication process that instructs a cell to produce an unwanted protein. Nanotechnology is also being used in biotechnology research to develop drug delivery systems, new treatments, and diagnostics.

These technologies are used in some of the medicines being tested in clinical trials at Vermont hospitals and research facilities.

In Colchester, for example, a monoclonal antibody for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is being tested. A recombinant fusion protein was studied in Burlington to treat age-related macular degeneration.

A monoclonal antibody targeting lymphoma is in clinical trials at Mountainview Medical in Berlin and Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center in Burlington.

The medicines and vaccines being developed today are helping to push science forward, which could lead to more and better treatments for patients.

This innovation in Vermont, as in other states, is the result of a successful collaboration between pharmaceutical companies and local research institutions.

What do you know about the pharmaceutical companies in Iowa? Iowa boasts of miles of land, making it an ideal location for pharmaceutical companies, while medical schools such as the University of Iowa attract some of the country’s best STEM talent.

Pharmaceutical companies in Iowa are all located in this low-key but hardworking region. Microbiologics, Inc., AbbVie, Novartis, Strata Oncology, and Forge Biologics are among the companies working the fertile ground in this region.

McKesson Corporation, a pharmaceutical giant has decided to set up shop in Clear Lake. The $65 million project includes the hiring of 164 workers to operate the 340,000-square-foot warehouse. The California-based company will make a significant investment in Iowa.

Overview of pharmaceutical companies in Iowa

McKesson is headquartered in San Francisco and employs approximately 85,000 people. It was founded in 1883 and is one of the oldest companies in the United States. It is ranked #15 on the Fortune 500 list as of 2014.

McKesson is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Iowa. McKesson is a leader in pharmaceutical distribution in the United States and Canada. McKesson Corporation delivers one-third of all pharmaceuticals used in Iowa.

According to the McKesson website, the company has an annual revenue of more than $137.6 billion and specializes in vital medicines, medical supplies, and health care information technology solutions.

Medicare, the federal health-care program for the elderly and disabled, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The occasion has sparked a flurry of debate about the program’s future — and more than a few calls for major changes to Part D, Medicare’s prescription drug benefit program.

There are growing calls for the federal government to intervene in drug-pricing negotiations between private insurers and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Such a change would be detrimental to Iowa’s seniors, severely limiting their access to critical medications.

Part D was added to Medicare in 2003; previously, Medicare did not cover the majority of prescription drugs.

And it operates differently than a typical government program. Insurance companies design and offer competing coverage plans in each state under Part D. Enrollees can choose the plan that best meets their medical and financial needs.

This level of choice and consumerism was intended to keep costs low while also providing seniors with options. And it was effective.

Despite initial claims that it would break the bank and bankrupt seniors, Medicare Part D turned out to be the rare government program that came in significantly under budget. Part D’s cost to taxpayers was predicted to exceed $122.88 billion in 2012. That year’s actual cost was only $55 billion.

Part D also provides Iowans with access to 30 prescription drug plans. Premiums in the state begin at $15.70.

Despite the variety of affordable options, there is a push in Washington to dismantle the program. Part D is too expensive, according to critics, and the government should intervene in price negotiations with drug manufacturers.

In November 2017, the Iowa State Association of Counties unanimously passed a resolution encouraging member counties to join in the litigation against pharmaceutical companies to hold them accountable for the country’s widespread opioid epidemic.

For downplaying the risks of opioids and aggressively marketing the drugs to treat chronic pain, 47 Iowa counties filed lawsuits against five pharmaceutical companies, their subsidiaries, and three physicians.

Story County is one of 53 unrepresented counties in the settlement, but it was asked to join to reach the maximum settlement value. A full settlement will result from municipalities’ full participation. The state will receive $143 million if all litigants, excluding Story County, participate.

Over the last two decades, the opioid epidemic has claimed the lives of over 500,000 Americans. According to Crueger Dickinson, a law firm representing Iowa counties, increased costs for counties have been linked to the crisis, including law enforcement, autopsies, and emergency medical services.

According to one study, Part D has helped reduce hospital visits by nearly 10% over the last decade.

Already, hospital care costs three times as much as pharmaceuticals. With fewer drugs on the market, spending on hospital care is likely to rise even further.

Therefore, for the pharmaceutical companies in Iowa to grow further, new companies need to be established and more drugs developed.

Science-Driven Complex Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Methodologies

Pharmaceutical manufacturing is the critical link between a medicine’s research and development and its availability to a patient to address an unmet medical need.

The processes involved in pharmaceutical manufacturing are complex and evolving, reflecting its close connection to scientific discovery.

While the overall process of producing a medicine has common elements, pharmaceutical manufacturing is further complicated by the existence of two broad manufacturing platforms that reflect the two broad classes of medicines that exist – one based on chemistry and the other in biology.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing entails many complex steps that necessitate a thorough understanding of scientific and engineering principles, as well as the use of high-tech equipment such as large tanks surrounded by a maze of pipes, pumps, and computer-controlled hardware.

While pharmaceutical manufacturing involves a set of common production steps, a closer look reveals two manufacturing platforms that reflect the different ways medicines are developed.

Small-molecule pharmaceuticals, which are created through chemical synthesis, are one type of medicine. The other type of medicine is large-molecule biologics, which are created using living cells.

Everyone has the right to life-saving medication. Pharmaceutical companies in Maine develop new and innovative treatments, but this does not give them the right to force Mainers to pay exorbitant drug prices.

“An Act To Establish the Maine Prescription Drug Affordability Board,” LD 1499, is an important step toward taming the skyrocketing cost of prescription medication.

Maine has procedures in place to ensure that monopolies such as power companies and health insurers do not charge exorbitant prices for their products, and pharmaceutical manufacturers should be treated similarly.

Pharmaceutical companies in Wisconsin collaborate with other health services to address the world’s evolving health challenges.

Wisconsin is home to some of the nation’s top pharmaceutical, with the University of Wisconsin-Madison investing more than $1 billion in R&D each year.

Overview of the Pharmaceutical Companies in Wisconsin

Wisconsin has a highly educated workforce and a low cost of living the best of both worlds, as evidenced by our high concentration of pharmaceutical companies and employment.

Also, Wisconsin is attempting to address worldwide health and sustainability challenges and propelling the globe toward better solutions by leveraging proven expertise in medical devices and diagnostic tools, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, digital health, and health research.

Wisconsin has become an appealing destination for foreign direct investment due to its strength in multiple subsectors of pharma. Many pharmaceutical companies in Wisconsin have grown into thriving businesses with technology that is attracting international attention.

Wisconsin’s pharmaceutical industry is large and growing, with state firms employing nearly 35,000 people across over 300 business establishments in 2016.

Since 2014, growth in both state establishments and employment has outpaced the national average. Each of the state’s five major industry subsectors saw job growth.

Wisconsin has a high concentration of specialized employment in the pharmaceutical subsector, as well as above-average concentrations in bioscience-related distribution, agricultural feedstock, and industrial biosciences.

In recent years, state research institutions have seen an increase in NIH funding awards, which totaled $424.9 million in 2017.

These federal funds are an important source of funding for the state’s $914 million in academic biosciences R&D expenditures.

Wisconsin As A Renowned Pharmaceutical Hub

According to the 2014 Batelle/BIO report on state pharmaceutical jobs, investments, and innovation, Wisconsin ranks first among metro areas nationwide in terms of the strength of its pharmaceutical sector.

Wisconsin was ranked in the top nine for specialized employment concentration in pharmaceuticals, according to the report, which divides the pharmaceutical industry into five sectors. Wisconsin is also one of only nine cities with significantly higher-than-average job concentrations in four of the five pharmaceutical sectors.

According to Batelle/BIO, Wisconsin ranked fourth in job creation in the drug and pharmaceuticals sector in 2012, with nearly 2,000 people employed. It also ranked eighth in the country for job concentration in medical devices, a sector that employs about 2,000 people in the metro area.

The University Research Park, Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, and Morgridge Institute for Research are among the many incubation and research facilities in the Madison Region,  Wisconsin that support life science entrepreneurs.

Supporting organizations such as the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation and the Clinical Trials Education Network of Wisconsin also provide resources to help pharmaceutical researchers and businesses transition from the lab to the marketplace.

BioForward, the statewide advocacy organization that serves as the voice of Wisconsin’s bioscience industry, provides information, resources, and professional development opportunities to advance the sector and its constituent companies.

Empowered by resources and talents

The pharmaceutical sector in Wisconsin is largely fueled by UW-Madison, which ranks fourth nationally in federal research funds with more than $1 billion in expenditures, more than half of which is spent directly on life sciences.

With nearly 9,000 sector-related degree conferrals in the 2013-2014 school year, including UW-degree Master’s in bioscience, higher education institutions in and adjacent to the region propagate an infusion of young talent into the life sciences industry.

The University of Wisconsin System Schools located in or near the Madison Region contributes to the region’s rich history and exceptional strength in the pharmaceutical industry.

In 2013-2014, these system schools conferred over 4,600 life science-related degrees, with the flagship UW-Madison campus leading the way with over 3,000.

Regional technical colleges offer degrees and certificates in pharma, bioinformatics, biotechnology, horticulture, and stem cell technologies, while information technology, manufacturing, and laboratory technician programs provide supporting and supplementary education for this sector’s workforce.

40 pharmaceutical companies in Utah

chibueze uchegbu | April 30th, 2022

More than 40 pharmaceutical companies in Utah are currently operating and manufacturing diagnostic tests, serological tests, personal protective equipment (PPE), therapeutics, and other laboratories that conduct various types of testing.

BioFire Diagnostics, one of Utah’s pharmaceutical leaders current demand for testing products far outnumbers supply.

Despite doing everything humanly possible to ramp up manufacturing and better meet demand, the company remains behind.

Overview of the pharmaceutical companies in Utah

Spectrum Solutions and its medical device and services division, Spectrum DNA, are headquartered on the Spectrum campus in Draper.

Before Spectrum, coronavirus testing required individuals to endure an invasive and uncomfortable swabbing of the throat and nasal cavity to collect a specimen.

Spectrum secured the first FDA EUA authorization for the use of saliva collected with their SNDA-1000 saliva collection device, ushering in an entirely new, pain-free alternative.

This incredible innovation also provided the first FDA EUA authorization for at-home biosample collection and provides 100 percent viral inactivation in a device.

The SDNA-1000 saliva collection device develops the most robust and safest biomaterial collection approach for the detection of COVID infections, ushering in a new era of at-home biosample self-collection for the diagnosis of many viral infections, mitigating any risk of infection throughout the testing process, and delivering over a 90% reduction in PPE usage compared to swabbing, saving both time and money.

Antibodies have become an important piece of the COVID puzzle, and pharmaceutical companies in Utah like Quansys BioScience, Predictive Laboratories, Recursion Pharmaceuticals, and NuView worked to provide serological testing.

This type of testing detects antibodies that indicate a person has had COVID but has developed the necessary immune factors to protect themselves.

Robotics and artificial intelligence have been used by Salt Lake City-based Recursion Pharmaceuticals to discover pharmaceuticals at a lower cost. AI is also being used to expedite the testing of COVID treatments and therapeutics. Similarly, RenalytixAI is developing artificial intelligence-based diagnostic testing for COVID and its effects on the renal system.

Keeping Utah secure

There’s ARUP Labs, a nationally recognized reference lab that runs thousands of tests every day for the State of Utah and the University of Utah Health Systems, among others.

According to ARUP CEO Sherrie Perkins, the company also validated Utah’s first COVID antibody test to detect previous virus exposure.

ARUP, along with other clinical laboratories in the state, continues to perform a large portion of Utah’s COVID testing as of fall 2020.

Throughout the pandemic, ARUP worked with the University of Utah Health, Intermountain Healthcare, the Utah Department of Health, and other state organizations to answer critical scientific questions about COVID.

ARUP’s Clinical Trials team assisted in the evaluation of COVID treatments. ARUP is currently working with the Utah Department of Health on a genetic study of SARS-CoV-2 to better understand how the virus spreads in Utah.

According to Perkins, they are also performing all testing for the Utah Health and Economic Recovery Outreach (HERO) project, which aims to keep Utahns safe at work and school.

Lawsuit Against Big Pharmaceutical Companies in Utah

Utah has become the 45th state to join a lawsuit alleging that large pharmaceutical companies conspired to raise generic medication prices by up to 1,000%.

The state joined the lawsuit against Teva Pharmaceuticals and 19 of the country’s largest generic drug manufacturers.

According to the lawsuit, industry executives met illegally to discourage competition. According to state prosecutors, emails and phone records reveal a multi-year conspiracy to fix prices and divide market share for generic drugs.

The medications on this list are used to treat a variety of medical conditions, including diabetes, cancer, and epilepsy.

40 pharmaceutical companies in Alabama

chibueze uchegbu | April 28th, 2022

Today, the essentials about pharmaceutical companies in Alabama are unraveled. Alabama is home to over 200 pharmaceutical companies, with an estimated annual economic impact of $7.3 billion and a track record of groundbreaking discoveries.

Southern Research, based in Birmingham, has discovered seven FDA-approved drugs used in cancer treatment, as well as significant advances in the treatment of HIV/AIDS, polio, and mosquito-borne viruses.

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Huntsville is a pioneer in human genome research, collecting genomic data for thousands of academic, clinical, and commercial clients across the country.

The fact that organizations are magnets for National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding underscores Alabama’s bioscience sector’s track record of innovation. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) received $325 million in NIH funding in Fiscal 2020 alone, an increase of $38 million from the previous year.

Aside from cutting-edge research and technology, one of the pharmaceutical sector’s most notable achievements is the high level of employment it has generated.

Nearly 18,000 Alabamians work in pharmaceutical jobs, with an average annual salary of more than $67,000. UAB’s economic engine is responsible for an estimated 53,000 jobs — nearly 10% of the total in the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan area.

Pharmaceutical companies in Alabama are expanding across the state. Oxford Pharmaceuticals established a $29 million manufacturing facility in Birmingham, and Evonik established an advanced biomaterials manufacturing facility with R&D capabilities.

SiO2 Materials Science invested $163 million in Auburn to increase the production of its patented vials for the federal government’s COVID-19 vaccine program.

Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park (CRP), the country’s second-largest research and technology park, is at the center of a lot of activity.

With nearly 30,000 employees and a mix of Fortune 500 companies and homegrown innovators, CRP contributes to the success of many high-tech enterprises, U.S. defense and aerospace agencies, and higher education institutions.

The Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance

Drug discovery in academia, research institutes, and small pharmaceutical companies will become an increasingly important source of new therapeutics in the future, as pharmaceutical companies look for druggable, promising targets as well as promising compounds to in-license.

Although the exact numbers vary depending on how a drug’s origin is defined, it has been estimated that universities and pharmaceutical companies in Alabama already account for roughly a quarter of all new drugs and roughly half of all scientifically innovative drugs approved by the FDA, particularly those that address unmet medical needs.

It is well-documented that the pharmaceutical industry’s productivity has been declining, for which several explanations have been offered, including rising costs, institutional environments that are not conducive to creativity and innovation, shareholder pressures that are incompatible with the long-term view required in drug discovery and development, and a shift from research and development to marketing, with a historical, albeit shifting, focus.

Pharmaceutical companies in Alabama are hesitant to invest due to the high-risk nature of the basic research required to support innovative drug discovery, but academia is a natural fit for these types of investigations, making collaborations between academia and industry a logical proposition. However, due to a variety of factors, these collaborations are not always straightforward.

There is, for example, a mismatch between what the pharmaceutical industry and academia consider a validated target and a promising lead compound.

For example, in the academic world, the publication of a new protein target and its role in disease in a high-impact journal would be considered a great achievement, whereas, in the pharmaceutical industry, it would be considered merely a good start, with the ultimate validation being the existence of an effective, well-tolerated drug that manipulates its target in humans.

Furthermore, academic investigators are unlikely to have access to the knowledge and resources required to bridge the gap between an intriguing laboratory finding and a novel lead compound for disease treatment, allowing (pre-)clinical proof of concept to be achieved.

These factors, combined with the increased emphasis on translational science at the National Institutes of Health, prompted an increasing number of academic institutions to establish drug discovery programs, utilizing a variety of funding sources, infrastructure, and operational procedures.

The idea behind most, if not all, of these programs, is to ‘de-risk’ the basic findings of the academic researcher and grow a chemical compound to a stage in the discovery and advancement pipeline that is mature enough to attract pharmaceutical partners’ interest and investment.

The Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance (ADDA) is a collaborative effort between the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and the Southern Research Institute (SR), both of which are located in Birmingham, Alabama.

SR is a non-profit organization that conducts basic and applied research in the areas of presymptomatic drug discovery, vaccine development, and drug development, in addition to becoming an academic drug development program.

40 pharmaceutical companies in Connecticut

chibueze uchegbu | April 27th, 2022

The pharmaceutical companies in Connecticut have a strong track record of growth and success.

It is a critical sector that demonstrates Connecticut’s economy is technology-driven and well-positioned for future growth Many of the pharmaceutical companies in Connecticut are developing truly cutting-edge therapies, products, and technologies that help treat people today and will undoubtedly play a significant role in improving medicine and quality of care in the future.

Pharma is big in Connecticut; more than 18,000 Connecticut residents work at over 40 different pharmaceutical companies providing different pharmaceutical jobs in ct.

Pfizer, Biohaven, and Boehringer Ingelheim have headquarters in Connecticut and invest more than $6 billion per year in pharmaceuticals.

Indeed, as part of Connecticut’s commitment to pharma, the state has established CURE, a cluster comprised of pharmaceutical and biotech companies.

Innovations of Connecticut Pharmaceuticals

Connecticut is embracing a new strategic vision for its pharmaceutical sector that could result in the creation of more than 6,000 new jobs over the next ten years as the state competes with neighboring New York and Massachusetts, both of which have thriving pharmaceutical and biotech industries.

Connecticut’s pharmaceutical sector employed 18,000 people across over 40 companies. Stakeholders have chosen six key areas of growth for the pharmaceutical industry.

Investment, infrastructure, recruitment, resource building, talent pipeline (from c-suite to bench), and marketing and branding are among the areas being groomed for growth.

During the first half of 2019, state lawmakers and key industry stakeholders collaborated to drive Connecticut’s development as a viable state for the life science industry.

The state working group stated in its announcement that it will collaborate to create a “vibrant ecosystem between sciences and the growing areas of digital health, medical devices, technology, as well as artificial intelligence and machine learning.”

It’s a significant move because it has the potential to attract business from neighboring New York, which may be looking for a less expensive option for real estate.

The two neighboring states New York and Massachusetts have had much greater success growing their pharmaceutical industries over the last decade.

New York City and the Boston metropolitan area have emerged as key pharmaceutical hubs in New England. During the same 10-year period, Connecticut lost two major anchor companies, Bayer and Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Despite those losses, large pharmaceutical and biotech companies in connecticut continue to have a significant footprint on the local economy.

According to the trade organization, Boehringer Ingelheim and Pfizer, for example, are committed to remaining in the state and are supportive of the industry and workforce.

The state has the sixth-highest number of scientists and engineers per capita in the country. Aside from the degrees sought in the sciences, Connecticut has a highly educated workforce, ranking third in the adult population with advanced degrees.

The state is well-positioned to grow pharmaceuticals, but there is still much work to be done. Collaboration is essential to ensuring that all stakeholders are working synergistically and making strategic investment decisions.

Several Connecticut-based companies worked on a vaccine, including the CaroGen Corporation. Since the pandemic’s early stages, the Farmington-based vaccine and immunology therapy company began working on a formula.

Connecticut is home to dozens of biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and life science companies. Pharmaceutical companies in Connecticut banded together in ways that were not possible, forming research, manufacturing, and distribution partnerships, collaborating to ensure vaccines and treatments developed to get to those in need as soon as possible.

Connecticut had only five pharmaceutical companies in 1993. However, by 2004, the state had 49 biotechnology and pharmaceutical firms. Yale University had the greatest impact on the development of this cluster.

There is little doubt that the most significant influence was the shift in Yale’s attitude and policies toward biotechnology-based industrial growth that occurred after 1993.
