Pharmaceutical activity
The Polish pharmaceutical market has an exceptionally high share of generics, says Monika Stefanczyk, Chief Pharmaceutical Market Analyst at PMR Ltd.
The only countries in Central and Eastern Europe with a higher share are Ukraine and Russia, but these countries do not have a modern reimbursement system.
Overall, according to PMR estimates, the share of generics in the total pharmaceutical market (pharmacy and hospital ) taking into account manufacturer prices is at around 70%, while in Romania in the Czech Republic it is 30%, and in the Czech Republic 40%. The reason for this is a very strict reimbursement policy to contain costs.
Although the Polish pharmaceutical market consisted mainly of large-volume generics, several Polish companies have started RandD businesses with a focus on novel, innovative molecules therapies and biosimilars.
In 2013, there were 191 companies in Poland that operated RandD in biotechnology.
Healthcare costs and access
Healthcare costs account for 7.4% of Poland’s GDP, which exceeds average spending in the region but is still lower than in Western Europe (10%).
Health costs in Poland increased by 50% in 2016 and will exceed $ 40,000 million. A new report from the Ministry of Finance estimates that GDP per capita in Poland will reach 74% of the European Union average by 2022.
Conclusion on the list of pharmaceutical companies in Poland
Poland ranks second in the most attractive pharmaceutical market in Central and Eastern Europe, only behind the Czech Republic.
The pharmaceutical sector in Poland, one of the most traditional, has changed radically in the last 25 years.
There has been a transition from state to private companies and new regulations have been introduced. The public health management system has changed and market shares were consolidated.
In addition, the importance of foreign pharmaceutical companies as investors in the Polish market has increased.
