Factors to Consider When Choosing a Nursing Home in Massachusetts

A nursing home is a big decision that needs to be carefully thought out for you or a loved one. Each nursing home option in Massachusetts has special qualities and services to offer.

In Massachusetts, selecting a nursing home necessitates careful consideration of numerous aspects. People can make an informed decision that ensures the well-being and happiness of their loved ones and also provides a less stressful experience for visiting family members by taking into account the location, licensing, quality of care, services, cost, resident, and family engagement.

It is essential to visit multiple facilities, ask questions, and gather as much information as possible to make a choice that is beneficial to both the patient, the family, and the caregiver.

Below are some of the key factors to consider when selecting a nursing home in Massachusetts.

  1. Location and Accessibility:

The location of a nursing home is an important factor to consider. It should be easily accessible for family

members and friends to visit regularly. Proximity to hospitals, medical facilities, and amenities such as parks, shopping centers, and religious institutions can also contribute to the overall quality of life for

residents.

  1. Licensing and Accreditation:

When evaluating nursing homes, it is crucial to check their licensing and accreditation status. In Massachusetts, nursing homes are regulated by the Department of Public Health (DPH).

Ensuring that the facility is licensed and in good standing with the DPH provides assurance that it meets state-mandated standards of care.

Ensure confirming the accreditation of nursing homes by international organizations or joint commissions that indicate the level of commitment to excellence and quality offered by the nursing homes.

  1. Services and Amenities:

The services and amenities offered by the nursing home should be considered to check if it is satisfactory to your taste and healthcare standards.

  1. Cost and Affordability:

Understanding the cost structure and financial implications is crucial. Ask about the facility’s payment options, including private pay, long-term care insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid.

Determine what is included in the base cost and if additional services or levels of care incur extra charges. It is essential to consider the affordability and financial sustainability of the chosen nursing home.

  1. Advanced Neurotherapy, PC

Advanced Neurotherapy is a family-owned wellness clinic in Needham, Massachusetts that specializes in neurofeedback.

Owner and director Dr. Jolene Ross, a licensed psychologist since 1986, was faced with a critical issue in her daughter Aliza’s development. She was diagnosed with ADHD in the second grade. The conversations Dr. Ross had with her educators began leaning towards starting Lee on medication.

Dr. Ross, having a background in behavioral medicine, did not want to turn to medication so quickly, but wanted to find something safe and effective that would help her daughter succeed. She decided to try neurofeedback with a local practitioner.  The results Dr. Ross saw in her daughter were astounding.

Aliza’s executive functions had greatly improved and her school performance reflected these changes.

However, after about a year of neurofeedback sessions, the neurofeedback practitioner moved away, but Dr. Ross wanted Aliza to continue on the path she was on with her treatment. Dr. Ross decided to receive neurofeedback training.

Aliza saw even greater results receiving treatment from her mother. Dr. Ross made it her mission to find the most effective and durable neurofeedback applications and help others optimize their brain function. Advanced Neurotherapy was born.

Advanced Neurotherapy, focuses on treatment modalities that are effective and durable.  Each of the services they offer has been thoroughly researched and tested by them and by others.

They work with you to determine which treatment modality or combination of treatment modalities will work best to achieve your goals and improve the quality of your life and the quality of life for those around you.

They provide the following services:  Neurofeedback, Brain Mapping, EMDR, Health Coaching, Parent Coaching, Psychotherapy.

All of their patients receive a brain map before beginning neurofeedback to determine treatment protocol. Their patients also receive a brain map after a period of neurofeedback training to determine progress and to allow for adjustments in treatment protocol.

This is unusual in the field of neurofeedback, but has been recommended by neurologists Dr. Frank Duffy (Children’s Hospital Boston) and Dr. Denise Malkowics (Institute for the Enhancement of Human Potential).

Jolene Ross, Ph.D.

Dr. Jolene Ross is the founder and director of Advanced Neurotherapy, a wellness clinic that utilizes behavioral medicine applications such as quantitative EEG analysis and neurofeedback.

She works with individuals and families challenged with neuro-cognitive, neuro-emotional, and neuro-developmental disorders.

4 Best Medical Schools in Massachusetts

chibueze uchegbu | October 21st, 2022

Massachusetts has FOUR medical schools. The medical schools are both research behemoths and staunch supporters of community health.

Boston is fantastic because it is a creative and intellectual university town. Aside from studying medicine, you can combine your knowledge with biotech, public health, public policy, business, and law to make endless improvements in healthcare.

Medical Schools in Massachusetts

Here are the four medical schools in Massachusetts.

1. Harvard Medical School

The graduate medical school of Harvard University, Harvard Medical School (HMS), is situated in Boston, Massachusetts’ Longwood Medical District. One of the nation’s oldest medical schools, HMS was established in 1782 and is consistently ranked first among medical schools for research.

Check also: 5 Top Medical Schools In Arizona

In contrast to the majority of other top medical schools, HMS has direct affiliations with a number of Boston-area teaching hospitals rather than just one. Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, McLean Hospital, Cambridge Health Alliance, Judge Baker Children’s Center, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital are just a few of the affiliated teaching hospitals and research institutions.

Following President Joseph Willard’s presentation of a report outlining intentions for a medical school to the President and Fellows of Harvard College, Harvard Medical School was established on September 19, 1782.

John Warren, Aaron Dexter, and Benjamin Waterhouse, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School, were the founding faculty members of Harvard Medical School. After Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, it is the third-oldest medical school in the country.

The Harvard Hall basement served as the initial lecture venue before moving to Holden Chapel. No tuition was charged, although students did have to buy tickets for the five or six daily lectures. In 1788, the first two pupils graduated.

Due to shifting clinical relationships in the following century, the medical school relocated several times. This was a result of the fact that Harvard Medical School does not directly own or run a teaching hospital.

The school relocated to Boston in 1810, to what is now Washington Street in the city center. As a result of a grant from the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the institution was relocated to Mason Street and given the name Massachusetts Medical College of Harvard University in 1816.

In order to be closer to Massachusetts General Hospital, the school was relocated to Grove Street in 1847.

The school was moved to Copley Square in 1883. Before this change, Charles William Eliot, who took over as Harvard’s president in 1869, discovered the medical school in the worst state of any university department.

In order to lay the framework for HMS’ transformation into one of the top medical schools in the world, he enacted radical changes that raised admittance criteria, established a formal degree program, and positioned HMS as a professional institution inside Harvard University.

The medical college relocated to its current site in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area in 1906. The quadrangle’s five original marble-faced structures still stand on the Longwood campus.

For its MD program, Harvard Medical School has made numerous curriculum changes. A three-part curriculum featuring a classroom-based pre-clerkship phase, a principle clinical experience (PCE), and a post-PCE phase have been maintained by HMS in recent decades.

There are two academic programs in the pre-clerkship stage. Most students enroll in the more conventional Pathways route, which emphasizes active learning and earlier entry into the clinic and includes classes alongside Harvard School of Dental Medicine students.

Through a longitudinal clinical skills course that lasts the whole pre-clerkship period, Pathways students get early exposure to the clinic. Each class has a small number of students who enroll in the HST track, which is jointly managed with MIT.

The HST track is created to train physician-scientists with a focus on fundamental physiology and quantitative comprehension of biological processes through classes that involve PhD students from MIT. The MD program at Harvard Medical School has extremely strict admission requirements.

For each entering class, there are 165 total spaces available, including 135 spots for the Pathways curriculum and 30 spots for the HST program.

Each curricular track examines applicants independently even though they both utilize the same application. 6,815 applicants submitted applications for the MD Class of 2023, and 227 were accepted (3.3%). A 73% matriculation rate was recorded. The Fall 2020 admissions rate for the Master of Medical Science (MMSc) program in Global Health Delivery was 8.2%.

In 1873, the medical college merged with Boston University to form the nation’s first coeducational School of Medicine. In 1976, both the Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine and the School of Public Health were established.

chibueze uchegbu | June 6th, 2022

If you’re looking, you’d find out that there are lots of occupational therapy programs in Massachusetts and its environs.

Amongst other therapy programs in Massachusetts, the occupational therapy program has carved out a space for itself and people are sure to take advantage of the opportunity.

Now, before we give out directions and locations of these occupational therapy programs in Massachusetts, we will first, talk about this type of therapy and who needs it.

What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT), is a health care program that requires the use of activities and tasks to help you adapt and improve your abilities after an injury, illness, or disability.

More so, occupational therapy brings you into your unique current ability and into full realization. It helps you get back into independence and most times, back to work.

With the help of an occupational therapist and team, you will begin to adapt back to society. Basically, the therapist will decide what activities best suit your condition. And then, guide you through these tasks and activities.

Furthermore, at first, these tasks may seem hectic and impossible due to conditions. But with determination and constant practice, you will notice great changes and improvements on your end.

Who needs occupational therapy?

As a matter of fact, people get injured in the line of work. People generally fall sick or have an accident, and in that event, they lose their ability to function independently.

So, when this is the case, occupational therapy has a role to play in making someone function independently.

Take, for example, the event that a person loses a limb in an accident, this kind of therapy helps integrate them back to work if possible.

Again, a person might develop mental health issues in the line of a job. This therapy helps them pull through and decides if they are fit to go back to work or not.

In essence, people with disability, mental health issues, occupational accident victims, and people that have suffered long-term illness and recovering all need occupational therapy.

Who is an occupational therapist

To continue, an occupational therapist is someone who is trained in carrying out occupational therapy. This line of work is not one that you just jump into. Literally, these therapists are trained till they graduate.

Also, they sit for the qualifying exams and earn a certificate and a license. With your certificate to practice in hand, you can work and earn a living as an OT.

The pharmaceutical companies in Massachusetts are widely regarded as pillars of the Commonwealth’s knowledge economy.

The Bay State is undeniably a world leader in biological and pharmaceutical research and development.

Massachusetts, along with California and Florida, is home to leading life sciences companies and institutions, making it the world’s leading center for pharmaceutical research and development. Massachusetts’ competitor states have made significant strides in increasing their share of biopharmaceutical investment, employment, and support for basic research over the last ten years.

A close examination of the state’s performance, however, reveals that, despite lagging job growth in comparison to its peers, Massachusetts continues to outperform other states in attracting highly-paid, high-value-added employment in the cluster’s leading companies.

According to the UMass Donahue Institute, bio-pharmaceutical employment in Massachusetts increased by 44 percent between 1998 and 2004, but the state fell from fifth to seventh in total biopharma employment.

Massachusetts has the highest average wage in the biopharmaceutical industry, with a wage of $98,595 in 2004.

By far, the highest levels of venture capital and National Institutes of Health (NIH) investment are found in Massachusetts and California. Massachusetts has the highest level of venture capital and NIH funding per bio-pharma worker in the country.
