What are the pharmacy schools in Alaska
The College of Pharmacy at Idaho State University is having a celebration in 2020. The College, which was founded by its first dean, Eugene Leonard, in 1920, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
A century after the program’s founding with three students, it has helped 79 students graduate this year.
They will include a very special group of six students who will become the first Doctor of Pharmacy graduates of the joint program between the University of Alaska Anchorage and Idaho State University.
A collaboration between UAA and ISU was formed in 2016, the first pharmacy school in Alaska, following years of discussion and planning.
Alaska was the only state in the nation without a pharmacy school until this agreement. In addition, the state had long struggled with a lack of pharmacists and a general deficit of healthcare professionals.
Outside Alaskan pharmacists frequently left, and pre-pharmacy students who left the state for pharmacy school frequently did not come back.

Pharmacy companies claimed that in 2009, roughly a quarter of open positions for pharmacists were vacant, and that it often took up to 15 months to fill them.

The ISU College of Pharmacy offers a 4-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree that can be completed in Pocatello or Meridian, Idaho or in Anchorage, Alaska. PharmD students may complete their fourth year at their clinical sites in Idaho (Boise, Pocatello, or Coeur d’Alene) or at their sites in Reno, Nevada or Anchorage, Alaska.
Their Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (BPSCI) also offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Pocatello or Meridian, Idaho. Their BPSC Department is the sole program in the state of Idaho for post-graduate education in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to obtain pharmacy experience prior to applying for admission to the PharmD program.

ISU’s College of Pharmacy uses a rolling admissions process. Applications are reviewed within one week of completion (i.e., all documents received and verified by PharmCAS). Applicants are invited to schedule an in-person or remote interview right away.
There are two admission options – priority consideration or regular admission. Either option leads to admission into the same Doctor of Pharmacy program. There is no designation in PharmCAS.
Priority Consideration
An option for students who know Idaho State University is their college of first choice and have completed General Chemistry I & II, Biology I, Statistics and several ISU general education requirements by the December 1 application deadline.
Regular Admission
This application option is for all other students who plan to complete the pre pharmacy and general education requirements by the April 3 application deadline.

If you wish to be one of their students, you must complete all pre-pharmacy requirements, except for biochemistry, by the end of the spring term of the year you apply. Biochemistry may be completed in the early summer session prior to your admission.
