The pharmaceutical companies in Turkey account for about 0.5% of the $1.2 trillion global pharmaceutical markets and have grown steadily over the past decade.

In addition to increasing its production, the industry has also dedicated itself to further RandD projects and the production of high-quality medicines. In 2018, Turkey was recognized as part of the PIC(s) International Alliance of Pharmaceutical Jurisdictions and takes a place on the global stage in implementing its localization policy.

In early 2020, Turkey faces one of its biggest challenges yet due to the outbreak of COVID19. Global supply disruptions, capital flight, and what is said to be the biggest global economic crisis since the Great Depression are threatening the industry.

Biotech players in particular are less likely to take advantage of the crisis due to their reliance on external funding. However, despite the unfavorable framework conditions, Turkish pharmaceutical manufacturers have repeatedly proven to be resilient.

Local and international manufacturers operating in the country are already playing an active role in the fight against the virus.

GBR conducted much of the research for this publication prior to the outbreak of COVID19 and we have attempted to update the report with new knowledge brought about by the pandemic where possible.

However, it is already clear that the pharmaceutical industry in Turkey will play a bigger role in the coming years than ever before.

Laboratories and production lines remain manned as pharmaceutical companies in Turkey struggle to supply the country’s hospitals with the medicines and supplies they need during this time of crisis.

The fact that they have been so successful so far is a testament to the strength that the industry has already achieved.

Innovations in the Pharmaceutical Markets in Turkey

The Turkish government aims to make Turkey one of the top ten economies in the world in healthcare services by 2023 by increasing R and D spending to 3% of GDP and increasing exports to USD 500 billion.

In addition, according to Turkey’s Ministry of Science and Industry and the Technology (AIFD) Strategy Report, Turkey should become Eurasia’s manufacturing base of mid and high-end technology products.

“Health Care Transformation Programme” was initiated in Turkey in 2004 and marked a major advance in public access to health services. This made treatments in Turkey also increase by 24% over the past 30 years.

According to a study by Columbia University professor Lichtenberg and the National Bureau of Economic Research, innovative drugs were responsible for 75% of the increase in life expectancy in the 30 countries surveyed including Turkey.

If the government can implement essential changes and effectively promote innovation in the healthcare system, the pharmaceutical industry can be the driving force to help achieve the government’s public health and economic goals.

However, in order to achieve sustainable progress in healthcare, Turkey must also focus on improving its competitive position.
