Choosing to study nursing will give you unlimited opportunities in the career path. Accelerated nursing programs are popular in the United States of America and Canada.

As an international student nurse, you will train in acute care hospitals, hospice care centers, and outreach clinics.

Studying in the US, you will have the opportunity to learn from experts and be surrounded by students and professionals from various cultural, ethnic, religious, socioeconomic, and educational backgrounds.

There are a wide variety of nursing courses in the different educational institutions across all the states in the US, providing students with the opportunity to choose the place and path that’s right for them.

Overview of accelerated nursing programs for international students

An accelerated nursing program is a fast-track nursing degree option designed to help students earn their Bachelor’s in Nursing (BSN) or Master’s in Nursing (MSN) quicker than the traditional, on-campus programs.

ABSN programs are pre-licensure programs, meaning students do not yet have their license to practice as registered nurses (RN).

Some of these programs enable already-working nurses to expand their education quickly and therefore qualify for advanced roles.

Most accelerated nursing programs, however, are designed for non-nurses who have a degree in another major but wish to change careers to nursing relatively fast.

What is ABSN? ABSN is an accelerated BSN program designed for individuals who have a bachelor’s degree in another field, and now wish to pursue a nursing degree.

ABSN programs allow these students to earn their bachelor’s degree in Nursing, without spending another four years in school to do so.

The average time it takes to complete an accelerated nursing program is between 1 to 2 years depending on the institution.

There are some flexible and accelerated nursing programs designed for licensed RNs, as well, to enhance their careers with a BSN or MSN degree. However, accelerated nursing programs are pointed to the ABSN degree route.

How Does an Accelerated BSN Program Work?

Below are the things you ought to know about accelerated nursing programs for international students. Every accelerated nursing program can differ in its structure, course formats, and curriculum.

When students pursue an associate degree in Nursing, they learn the fundamentals of nursing practice and patient care.

They gain experience through hands-on, on-the-job clinical, combined with classroom learning and laboratory coursework.

An accelerated BSN program is designed to provide students with both: the fundamentals of nursing and the wellness continuum, as well as the advanced knowledge that comes with a Bachelor’s in Nursing.

As a result, accelerated BSN programs work on a full-time and continual schedule so that aspiring nurses can finish their degrees as fast as possible.

Typically, it’s not recommended for ABSN students to maintain a job while taking this program, due to the intensive study needed.

Clinical practicum is flexible, as well, and can be scheduled any day of the week. Additionally, the accelerated BSN courses are offered in an on-campus/online format, allowing students to gain in-person experience while enjoying the flexibility of online learning when possible.

In an accelerated nursing program, you can expect comprehensive and rigorous courses. Most ABSN programs will require a combination of classes, labs, and clinical experiences.

Upon completion of an accelerated nursing program, you can walk away with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This will make you eligible to pursue your license as a registered nurse. Licensure must be earned through the NCLEX-RN board examination.

Route of application of accelerated nursing programs for international students

These programs are open to applicants from outside the US and Canada. The specific admission criteria and documentation requirements for international applicants vary from school to school depending on their mode of operation.

It is equally important to note that there are accelerated nursing programs for international students online.

We recommend you visit the institution of choice and get first-hand information on the necessary requirements for your application.

These programs are competitively driven and are fast-paced but many international students enjoy this type of learning environment.

These programs are often referred to as second-degree programs and are generally geared towards students who have received a prior degree.

Are there Online accelerated nursing Programs?

There are different institutions that offer students the ability to complete their accelerated program courses entirely online as stated earlier.

The clinical hours, however, will need to be completed in person at a healthcare facility. Many students find online programs more convenient than traditional campus learning.

It is essential to note that an online accelerated program will still be intensive and demanding. You might be able to do your coursework at late hours or on the weekends, but you will still be committing to a heavy workload.

Difference between accelerated and Bridge Programs

Both accelerated nursing programs and bridge programs offer paths to nursing degrees, but they are very different. The programs save students time and money by allowing them to earn their degrees more quickly than they would be pursuing traditional pathways.

Accelerated programs are designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in another area. It allows them to take nursing courses at a fast pace and earn their BSN quickly. They aren’t meant for people with prior nursing experience.

In contrast, bridge programs are designed for current nurses. They build on the knowledge nurses already have to help them attain higher-level nursing degrees.

For example, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) can use a bridge program to earn their BSN without needing to spend four years in school.

Similarly, an RN who has earned an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) can pursue their Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with an RN-to-MSN bridge program.

41 top Pharmaceutical companies in Lebanon

Pharmaceutical companies in Lebanon have long been a small but important export industry.

Until recently, the country’s drug spending was among the highest in the Middle East, accounting for around 50% of total healthcare spending and around 3.5% of GDP.

The central bank’s recent inability to continue to subsidize all drug imports has meant that multiple economic shocks have combined with underlying market weaknesses, including a high reliance on domestic spending and poor supply chain management, to create a key critical juncture for the drug sector.

Unless the government quickly implements measures to gradually rationalize and phase out subsidies, the complete abolition of drug subsidies would exacerbate a chaotic environment in the drug market and deepen an already deep healthcare crisis.

Lebanon is considered a center for quality healthcare services in the Middle East due to its internationally accredited hospitals and talented doctors.

Lebanon’s emerging pharmaceutical market is leveraging its competitive advantages,  experiencing rapid growth, and becoming more competitive regionally and globally.

Opportunities exist to develop over-the-counter (OTC), generic and proprietary drug manufacturing under license from international companies.

The Weizmann Institute of Sciences developed the innovative multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone, one of the first Israeli drugs to receive US approval.

Recent decades have seen Israel become an even more integral part of the global pharmaceutical industry, with exports to the U.S. alone climbing from $208 million in 1997 to $5.9 billion in 2018.

Here’s a look at some of the innovative companies in the Israeli pharma landscape:

  • Drug discovery pioneer CytoReason has developed the world’s first and only machine learning-based model of the human immune system and the cells that feed it Understand. how immune cells function in the context of disease, tissue and treatment. Founded in 2016 based on research from Stanford University and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, the company works with leading companies and institutions including GSK, Pfizer, and the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy.
  • The National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev (NIBN) is a truly unique player in the local ecosystem: the first independent RandD-based entity established as a company under a university umbrella, in this case, the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Founded in 2009, NIBN commercializes academic research focused on cancer treatments; infectious diseases; autoimmune and metabolic diseases; human genetic disorders; neurodegenerative diseases, and applied biotechnology. The company’s technologies have formed the basis for entirely new businesses and have been integrated into existing businesses, and its applied research has resulted in measurable real-world impacts, including a 30 percent reduction in infant mortality among Israel’s Bedouin population in the Negev desert. Founded in 1968,
  • Dexcel Pharma is the largest private pharmaceutical company in Israel. The company manufactures branded and generic drugs and has a portfolio that includes more than 85 products in more than 175 dosage forms. The company employs more than 1,000 people across its offices in Israel, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Singapore.

Historical Background

There was no pharmaceutical company until the early 1930s, although there were pharmacies where medicines were prepared from local and imported raw materials.

However, the idea that the local pharmaceutical industry was necessary had already been discussed for quite several years.

Throughout the 1920s, many people complained that imported medicines were overpriced. Physicians, pharmacists, and the general public wanted cheaper alternatives.

In the early 1930s, immigrants from central Europe, mostly from Germany, began making their way to Israel. The newest immigrants had left Europe in fear of the Nazis. They were well-trained

professionals from the big cities who brought capital and knowledge with them. These immigrants eventually sowed the seeds of another ethos, that of modern industrial society.

After the establishment of the State of Israel, the rhetoric of necessity returned to dominate the scene.

Israel’s unstable economy made it impossible to import medicines, and the local pharmaceutical industry benefited from the need for modern medicines in

The production of raw materials became even more of a necessity and the economy could not afford to import them. Industry leaders  had a vision: a self-sufficient Israeli pharmaceutical industry.

Health insurance in Pennsylvania

Health insurance in Pennsylvania

chibueze uchegbu | February 15th, 2022

Are you wondering what health insurance in Pennsylvania is like? You’re not alone in this thought.

Choosing health insurance is one of the most critical decisions you’ll ever have to make for the purpose of providing a safety net for you and your loved ones.

No humans plan to get sick or fall into any unforeseen circumstances that’ll warrant access to health insurance, but these incidents are an inevitable part of humans.

So preparing beforehand for these undesirable instances through health insurance is one of the best things you can do for your family and yourself.

There are a ton of health insurance schemes in Pennsylvania you can access, but before we discuss that, let’s quickly look at key information about Pennsylvania’s health insurance.

Background Information about Pennsylvania’s Health Insurance

For the second time, Pennsylvania used a state-based exchange on the federal platform, and more than 337,000 residents enrolled in health insurance for the year 2021 open enrollment. Before this time, Pennsylvania used to operate a federally-facilitated marketplace for the residents.

This year, the state is going to be adopting Pennie for the open enrollment period. Signing up began late last year and ends early this year.

The average amount a full state-based exchange will cost $25 million a year, which means the figure is quite low compared to the $95 million Pennsylvania paid to use the Federal Exchange in 2018.

The idea of the cost savings is to fund a new reinsurance program designed to make state health insurance more affordable and accessible by many residents. This reinsurance program referred to as Act 42 was signed into law by Governor Tom Wolf in 2019.

Now let’s talk about the available health insurance schemes you can key into in Pennsylvania to get yourself and your family covered in times of need.

However, it’s important to state here that this will depend on the types of health insurance you want and the different markets available.

 Available Health Insurance in Pennsylvania

Below are some of the available health insurance options available in Pennsylvania:

Pennie.com

Pennie provides an individual or families with the ability to access high-quality care coverage, coupled with ease of applying for financial assistance.

If you’re a PA resident and are a citizen, U.S. national or you’re qualified for immigration status, you can apply for Pennsylvania’s insurance coverage via Pennie. Enrollment for this coverage opens within November 1 to January 15.

There are also special enrollment periods, which give the opportunity to anyone who’s experienced a recent circumstance in his life and would like to sign up during this Special Enrollment Period to access health insurance coverage.

Some of the changes include losing health care insurance through an employer, moving to a new area, and a change in marital status.

Medicare

Medicare is a federal health insurance scheme for people aged 65 and above. This type of insurance is administered by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services with the mandate of providing coverage either directly or via private health insurance companies via four distinct levels namely:

  • The Medicare Part A, which is hospital coverage
  • The Medicare Part B, which rotates around the medical coverage
  • The Medicare Part C, which is the Medicare Advantages Part A and B together
  • Medicare Part C, which covers the prescription of drugs

If you’ve decided to key into Medicare, it’s then important that you know the right time to enroll. Also, you should consider enrolling immediately you become eligible for this coverage because enrolling at a later stage may cost a higher amount.

You can start the enrollment process for Medicare when you’re three months away from 65 and ends three months after clocking this age.

You’re still allowed to sign up even if you miss the initial enrollment period and this can be done from January 1 to March 31 each year, but some penalties might apply.

You may still be given an opportunity to make some changes to your plan as part of a Special Enrollment Period. This can be done around October 15 to December 7 annually.

Medical Assistance/CHIP

Based on your income status, you can qualify for free or low-cost health insurance through the Children’s Health Insurance Program or Medicaid.

You can actually enroll for this type of coverage year-round, which means there are no deadlines for applying for this healthcare coverage.

COBRA/Mini-COBRA Continuation Coverage

COBRA gives you the privilege of maintaining the coverage you had while working with your former employer.

It’s not uncommon that when people are laid off, the company’s insurance coverage goes out of the window, which is what the COBRA is trying to bridge the gap here.

As time passes, if you’ll be continuing the COBRA coverage, you should be ready to pay for the portion of the premium your previous employer paid on your behalf for the coverage. You also must note that you can elect COBRA COVERAGE but you don’t necessarily have to do it.

Final thoughts

You don’t have to go through any hassles if you’re looking for health insurance coverage as a Pennsylvanian.

Do the research as there are many insurance coverages you can key into in the state, but this is also dependent on the type of plan you want and how much you’re budgeting for the coverage.

As a couple, the rate of health insurance coverage may be low, as the insurance rate will be based on the youngest partner’s age. So the best bet is to apply for the same plan rather than doing it individually as this may cost you an extra few bucks.

Health Insurance in the Philippines

Health Insurance in the Philippines

chibueze uchegbu | February 15th, 2022

Sincerely, health care should always be the topmost priority of a people. This is because, as it is rightfully said, a healthy person is one who remembers to work.

Again, a country that thrives in everything is a country that takes its people’s health care seriously. The government of the Philippines got to understand these sayings and set up a health care system for its people.

We believe that part of what prompted the upgrading of the health insurance system in the Philippines was a result of having so many visitors in the Philippines.

Overview of health insurance in the Philippines

For people to come to the Philippines and live, they want to make sure their health can be covered. So, health care insurance in the Philippines has some level of good standard to it now.

As such, the World Health Organization (WHO) ranked the health care system in the Philippines 60th in the whole world.

It still did not stop there, the government of the Philippines keeps making the health care system better each passing year.

For better understanding, it is very important we explain health care insurance in simpler terms. Firstly, health insurance is a type of contract that pays for the hospital bills and drugs of an individual in full or in part. It is either the insurance company pay the hospital bills themselves or give out cash to their clients to pay.

More so, health insurance also covers prescription drugs, doctor’s visits, vision, and dental expenses.

This means that once an individual who has health insurance gets sick or has any kind of health emergency, the health insurance company that they use helps cover their medical bills. However, the coverage has to do with the plan the insured bought.

Types of health insurance in the Philippines

Firstly, in the Philippines, there are three types of healthcare insurance systems available to Filipinos.

The government-run health insurance system has been made very affordable to Filipinos. The private health insurance companies, and the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs). Of course, you can choose from either of them because the end goal is to get your health and your family insured.

However, private health insurance companies have their perks and all but they can be quite expensive for low-income earners to access. Also, HMOs have people it serves better. So, instead of going without having your health insured, it is better you check out the three and go with the one that suits your need.

Again, the expatriates in the country have a plan called the evacuation plan. This plan is also offered by private health insurance companies.

Government health care insurance in the Philippines

Government health insurance in Philippines has been made available for all citizens. It was done in a bid to curb the unnecessary diseases and illnesses that come with a lack of proper health care in the country.

In 2019, the Filipino government set up a healthcare system called the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation, PhilHealth for short.

The program provides an affordable healthcare system for citizens that can not afford private and expensive health insurance companies. The beauty of PhilHealth is that it does not collect deductibles or allow co-pays for users.

Furthermore, the PhilHealth program is funded by the government and provides various health plans for the people that are enrolled in it.

These programs have different plans for different sets of people according to your age or income like:

Lifetime Members plan: This plan is for old and retired government workers who are from sixty years and above.

This set of people has paid the slated amount for health care regularly for a long period of time. Therefore, they are placed on a totally free health care insurance plan.

Formal sector plan: The government automatically provides a coverage plan for government workers In the Philippines.

Senior Citizen plan: The senior citizen plan covers old Filipinos that have never bought a coverage plan before. That is, an elderly Filipino that is sixty and above but did not previously insure falls into this plan.

Informal Economy plan: The plan is for immigrants that are working in the Philippines, and also the self-employed. However, this plan does not cover tourists in the country.

Sponsored members plan: Some local governments in the states subsidize some of these health care plans to accommodate their people. The sponsored member’s plan is for those people that their local governments subsidize.

It is important to note that, if you are not a citizen of the Philippines, you are not entitled to any government health insurance coverage. Also, if you are married to a citizen, you will be covered as a dependent.

As it stands, there are benefits that come with government health care insurance. Aside from being very affordable to the poor and retired citizen, the extra benefits include:

  • Maternity care
  • Laboratory tests
  • Out and Inpatients services
  • Surgeries
  • Catastrophic services

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

These HMOs are made up of a network of private organizations that come together to provide health insurance for their members.

It works for health emergencies. Just visit any accredited HMO hospital or clinic, show your card and get your needed medical attention.

Also, some private companies provide their workers with HMOs. Besides, If you are enrolled in this type of plan, you can only access health care plans from the health care providers in the network.

Furthermore, there are two popular Health Maintenance Organizations in the Philippines. The MediCard and the Maxicare.

Maxicare

The Maxicare healthcare corporation is among the top Health Maintenance Organizations. Basically, a group of doctors and businessmen came together in 1987 and formed Maxicare. Just for the sole purpose of providing great healthcare opportunities for the people.

Currently, Maxicare boasts of about twenty-four thousand networks of doctors and specialists, and about one thousand, four hundred hospitals and clinics.

Not only that, but Maxicare also has about one thousand dental services and it serves about 1.6 million people in the country.

MediCard

This Health Maintenance Organization has a network of about forty-three thousand accredited doctors and about over one thousand hospitals and clinics in the Philippines.

MediCard opened its doors for a business close to three decades now and they are still strongly in business till now.

In furtherance, they offer lots of health care plans to their clients which are:

MediCard Family Individual plans: These plans are ready for families or individuals that want to get coverage for preventive health care, outpatients, hospitalization, health emergencies, or dental care.

MediCard VIP Plans: This particular healthcare plan can cover you even if you had an emergency outside the country. However, it still covers out-patients, dental coverage, and preventive health care.

The MediCard RxER: RXER is another better form of MediCard package that allows people of any age to join. The coverage offers ranges from trauma cases, out-patients, emergency cases, or preventive care.

MediCard HealthPlus: This plan covers Free-Standing Clinics for one full year, outpatient, and preventive coverage.

MediCard Kabayan: The overseas sponsors created this plan but still provide good health coverage for their beneficiaries in the country.

The MediCard Select: It gives room for the return of funds that were not used. It is another plan that provides varieties of coverage for its beneficiaries.

MediCared Health Check: The plan remains valid for a full year. This great plan gives you the opportunity to constant medical check-ups as often as you desire. Also, a discount on lab tests, and physical exams for once. You only get to pay P500.

My MediCard: This plan offers you medical check-ups with the MediCard doctors. It also comes with one-time oral prophylaxis and lasts for one year. This plan goes for just P3,600.

Benefits of Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)

  • Surgeries
  • Hospitalizations
  • Lab tests
  • Medications
  • Dental services
  • Outpatient services

Private health care insurance in Philippines

Private health insurance in Philippines is for the well-to-do in the country. However, they live up to their standards in the services they provide for their clients.

A little over 30% of the country makes use of private health care insurance companies. This includes the visitors like the tourists and the Expats.

Moving forward, the private health care insurance companies offer wider and more convenient plans. But as explained earlier, it costs a lot, especially if you do not earn much.

Still, private health insurance in Philippines still serves a great purpose for non-citizens in the country and it is better we speak about them in case a traveler wants to use their services.

chibueze uchegbu | February 14th, 2022

Healthcare in Liverpool reflects the unique historical legacy of the port. The city had five of the most deprived areas in the country in 2012 according to a Church Urban Fund report.

According to Mayor Joe Anderson, “The people in Calderstones, Woolton, and Childwall outlive the people in other areas of Liverpool, like parts of north Liverpool, by 10 to 12 years or so.”

Liverpool has had unstable administrative arrangements with the North West region, and in particular with Manchester since the establishment of the NHS.

In 1946 drawing the boundary between the Liverpool and Manchester regional hospital boards proved to be particularly difficult because of “the jealousy felt by Liverpool for Manchester and the reluctance of Preston to consider any scheme centred on Liverpool or Manchester.”

NHS North West was established as a strategic health authority in 2006. It had oversight of 24 primary care trusts, 23 acute trusts, 8 mental health trusts, 7 specialist trusts, as well as the North West Ambulance Service.

In October 2011 NHS North West, alongside NHS Yorkshire and Humberside and NHS North East became a part of the NHS North of England SHA cluster a temporary administrative merger to manage the North of England health economy until the planned dissolution of SHAs in March 2013. The authority closed on 31 March 2013 as part of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

Hospitals in Liverpool

Liverpool is unusual in having a large number of small specialist NHS trusts. In October 2014 plans were unveiled in the Healthy Liverpool programme, approved by Liverpool Clinical Commissioning Group and supported by the city council which would concentrate services, especially for cancer patients and major trauma at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The proposals, which will be subject to public consultation, include:

  • Improvements in primary care
  • Greater access to GPs
  • More support for people to manage their own care
  • Better illness prevention
  • Some services moving from hospitals into the community
  • Changes to some hospital services to improve outcomes and quality.

Dr Fazlani, chair of the CCG said “If we reduced emergency admissions to hospitals by just 11% we would be able to afford an extra one and a half GPs in every practice in the city. This is the virtuous circle we are aiming to create”.

Building work for the new Royal Liverpool Hospital started in 2014. When completed, Liverpool will host one of the largest hospitals in the UK, with 18 theatres, 23 wards, 646 single bedrooms, a large Clinical Research Facility, and a 40-bed Critical Care Unit.

Moreover, the hospital’s single ensuite bedrooms will not only provide patients with the highest standards of comfort, privacy, and dignity, but they will also help reduce infection risks drastically.

Hundreds of hospital staff were consulted during the design of the new building to ensure maximum efficiency. Gone are the days of departments that collaborate on a daily basis being situated at opposite sides of the building.

Computer-aided design meant that staff were able to give their invaluable input to improve the final design, ensuring their own work needs were taken into account.

Liverpool is the site of Europe’s first dedicated 5G health and social care pilot, Liverpool 5G Health and Social Care, which is based in Kensington, Liverpool, and is testing eleven new technologies.

These include Safehouse Sensors, which are installed in the homes of vulnerable people to detect falls, changes in temperature, and unusual behavior patterns and PAMAN, a video link to a local pharmacy that helps people to take medicines at home safely.

The technical infrastructure is provided by Blu Wireless Technology. It uses existing fibre and equipment erected on street furniture like lampposts.

It was given an additional £4.3 million in August 2020 to develop a private independent 5G network for health and social care services in selected areas of Liverpool.

This is to include a medical-grade device to manage and monitor health conditions remotely, an app to teach anxiety reduction techniques, a remote GP triaging service, wound care and management, and sensor technology.

List of Top Hospitals in Liverpool

As one of the UK`s largest cities, Liverpool, has undergone a period of economic revival in recent years and is redefining itself as a vibrant world centre for the knowledge economy, in particular the life sciences.

To achieve this ambitious goal, the health services must have the ability not only to provide first class care for the population’s wellbeing but also to create opportunity for hi-tech professional employment in the city.

Two new hospital facilities – the Royal Liverpool and the new Alder Hey Children’s hospitals – are being built in Liverpool to bring health and wealth to the region.

The Royal Liverpool Hospital has been a centre for pioneering healthcare in the city for more than 150 years, treating more than 650,000 patients annually.

As the largest hospital in Merseyside and Cheshire, the Royal already provides emergency, general and specialist treatment to patients from the north-west of England, north Wales, and the Isle of Man, as well as being a major cancer research, diagnosis and treatment centre.

But the existing hospital facilities are becoming outdated, with the crumbling and inefficient infrastructure threatening the quality of care that can be provided to the local community.

Refurbishment of the original hospital would not only have been extremely costly, lengthy and disruptive, it still would not have provided patients with the environment they deserve.

So the decision was made to build a brand new hospital adjacent to the existing building to radically renew and improve local healthcare.

In 2006, they dedicated the state-of-the-art barn theatre, which is part of a larger initiative to establish a urological diagnosis and treatment center at Broadgreen Hospital.

The addition of the extra theatre has resulted in a shift in working patterns, with consultants now able to run simultaneous operating tables to make the most of the available theatre capacity.

Because the Broadgreen Treatment Center distinguishes between scheduled and unforeseen care, patients are less likely to have their surgeries canceled.

With its own radio station, Broadgreen Hospital is the only hospital in the city to have one of these. Radio Broadgreen can be found on bedside radio headsets, as can Radio Broadgreen.

The hospital shares the site with the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Trust and the Broadoak Unit which is part of Mersey Care NHS Trust.

Conclusion on Hospitals In Liverpool

It is becoming increasingly difficult to deliver quality care to the local community because of the deteriorating and inefficient infrastructure of the existing hospital facilities.

Not only would the renovation of the previous hospital have been exceedingly expensive, time-consuming, and disruptive, but it would not have provided patients with the setting they deserved.

As a result, the decision was made to construct a completely new hospital adjacent to the current structure in order to significantly improve and renew local healthcare.

How to Become a Doctor in UK for Foreigners

Learning to become a doctor isn’t easy – studying medicine for 5 or 6 years is just the beginning of what is a lifetime journey of learning. Even after you become a doctor, you will never stop learning on the job until your retirement.

For clarity, we have outlined a good number of the things you should know about how to become a doctor in the UK for foreigners. We did a step-by-step analysis on how to go about becoming a doctor in the UK for foreigners.

Plan Ahead

In the UK, most medical schools require you to submit your application by 15th October to start in September the following year.

Even if you apply by 15th October, you must begin preparing earlier. The desire to become a competitive student starts in the first year of the university.

One needs to ensure resources and materials needed for the academic journey are always at their disposal.

You may have to take A level or apply for a Medical foundation program if you do not study a high school qualification that qualifies you for direct entry to Medicine.

 Identify Your Options

The General Medical Council requires each of the UK’s medical schools to meet certain standards, so you can be assured of a high-quality education no matter what medical school you choose.

Your choice school should be the ones you met their requirements and your UKCAT score is high enough to attract them.

The mode of teaching, learning, lifestyle and general university culture should equally be taken into consideration.

Many UK medical schools offer Problem Based Learning curricula in which independent learning is a key component of the learning process.

This is suitable for active learners and team workers. You can also find out when clinical placements start.

You can visit a medical school during an open day if you’re traveling from overseas. Even if you cannot make an open day, you may still take a visit.

Before applying, contact the schools you’re interested into schedule a meeting. Check your eligibility beforehand to avoid wasting time.

Foreign Doctors in UK Requirements

Having talked about how to become a doctor in the UK for foreign students, let’s throw details on how to work in the UK as a foreign-trained doctor.

There is every possibility of you becoming a doctor in the UK as a foreign-trained doctor, provided all the requirements have been met.

It will take more than just your certificates and documentation to start work as a doctor. You will need to go through a series of evaluations and medical studies assessments.

The General Medical Council (GMC) issued licenses to practice medicine and apply to all doctors in the UK regardless of whether they are employed by the NHS or private sector, either full-time or part-time and permanently or as locums.

Registration

To practice medicine in the UK, doctors need to be registered with the General Medical Council, follow the GMC’s good medical practice guidelines, and be subject to the GMC Fitness to Practice process.

It will be impossible to apply for registration without a license for doctors who have never registered with the GMC.

Below are the requirements

  • Your nationality
  • The country where you got your undergraduate medical degree.
  •  The kind of work you want to do.
  •  Whether you’ve completed a post-graduate training program or internship.

To apply for registration, you should verify that you possess an acceptable primary health care qualification. If you are unsure about your qualifications, you should check with the GMC.

Additionally, international medical graduates (IMGs) will be required to show their medical knowledge and skills, and as a condition of registration, all applicants may have to prove they are proficient in English. Visit the IMGs website to know more about this.

We equally wish to note that getting registered with GMC does not guarantee automatic employment in the UK. However, it is usually a good place to start.

Requirements for Non-European Economic Area nationals

For non-UK/EAA nationals, you will have to meet some requirements stated in the UK Visa Immigration before you can be allowed to enter and start work in the UK.

Foundation Programme

A two-year Foundation Programme is required of all UK medical graduates after graduation. It is the link between medical school and specialist or general practice training.

The Foundation Programme will provide trainees with a variety of specialist and general practice placements.

After completing the Foundation Programme, doctors can apply to a specialty or a general practice training program.

As part of your degree, you may have finished an internship year. If the GMC has granted you full registration, you will need to consider entering the foundation program via a locum post.

Further information is available on the Medical and Dental Recruitment website.

Types of Registration

There are different types of registration available for doctors seeking to work in the UK. The type you take depends largely on nationality, qualification, status, among many other things.

Provisional Registration: Newly qualified doctors can only work in approved Foundation Year 1 posts with provisional registration (alongside a license to practice). It is illegal for provisionally registered doctors to work in any other type of position.

You can apply for GMC after the successful completion of your Foundation year 1 program. Below are the requirements.

  • Graduates with a UK medical qualification who have graduated from UK universities recognized in the Medical Act of 1983.
  •  International graduates with a primary medical qualification who have passed the PLAB test but haven’t completed an internship.
  • Medical school graduates from the EEA, Switzerland, and other countries with EC rights but who graduated outside the EEA.
  •  Switzerland Medical school graduates from the EEA, Switzerland, and other countries with EC rights but who graduated at EEA or Swiss schools.

Full Registration: Full registration will enable doctors to work in any field provided they have the license to work there.

For a doctor to take up a consultant qualification, he or she must have a specialist registration while those wishing to work as GPs must be on the GP register.

Foreign-trained doctors qualified outside the UK may be able to apply directly for full registration after completing a postgraduate clinical internship and holding an acceptable primary medical qualification.

For the registration process to be completed, all doctors are required to visit the GMC in person to undergo a pre-registration identity check.

Only original documents can be accepted. A photograph of the doctor will be taken and this will be made available to employers so they can be assured of the doctor’s identity.

Graduates and foreign medical graduates new to full registration or returning to the practice register following an absence from practice are required to work within an approved practice setting (APS) deemed appropriate by the GMC.

When EEA graduate doctors first begin work in the UK under full registration, the GMC recommends they also work in an APS.

Most NHS employers have approved practice setting status, and the purpose of the APS system is to protect the public.

It might appear too much of a process, but if you want to become a doctor in the UK as a foreigner, then you should avail yourself to take these listed steps.

Further information on APS can be found on the GMC website.

Specialist Registration

The General Medical Council (GMC) requires that all consultants (except locum consultants) be registered as specialists. To become a registered specialist, doctors must complete a GMC-approved training program.

After completion of the specialist program, they will issue you any of the certificates below.

To be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register, doctors who have not completed a full GMC-approved training program must make an application under the General and Specialist Medical Practice Order.

GP Registration: In the UK, from 1 April 2006, all doctors working in general practice in the NHS (apart from doctors in training, such as GP registrars) must be registered on the GP Register. This requirement extends to locums as well.

English language proficiency: Doctor jobs in the UK for overseas doctors require you to prove to the GMC your proficiency in English. This may be shown through the International Language Test System (IELTS) or the Occupational English Test (OET).

IELTS

In the IELTS, candidates will need to show that they meet the GMC’s requirements in the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test, which covers four main areas:

  • speaking
  • listening
  • reading
  • writing

To become a member of the GMC’s register, candidates must score at least 7.5 on the IELTS. For more information, please visit the IELTS website.

OET: OET as an alternative to IELTS introduced by the UK in 2018. In the healthcare sector, OET is an international English language test designed specifically to assess the language communication skills of healthcare professionals hoping to register in an English-speaking environment and perform their duties there.

Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB)

We cannot give a full description of  How to become a Doctor in the UK for Foreigners if we cannot talk about the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB).

The PLAB test is used by the GMC to determine whether international doctors have the required medical knowledge and communication skills to practice in the UK. Doctors taking the PLAB test must have passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Occupational English Test (OET)

Further information on the PLAB test, including dates, test centers, and costs, can be gotten from the GMC’s website.

Candidates can take the PLAB’s first part at several overseas test centers, but they must take the second part in the UK.

What You Should About UK Recruitment for Foreign Doctors

As part of the Department of Health and Social Care code of practice, many NHS organizations engage agencies to help with overseas recruitment campaigns. It is clear in the code that active recruitment from developing countries is unethical.

Additionally, the code of practice states that candidates should not be required to pay a fee upfront. If you are asked to pay a fee upfront for promises of NHS housing or work, please contact Action Fraud.

Conclusion

With the length of the process involved in becoming a doctor in the UK as a foreigner, one might be quick to give up on it.

Apart from the high wage doctors in the UK earn, they are equally among those with the highest compensation in incentives.

Therefore, at the end of the day, you will discover it was all worth it. Because of the numerous registrations, picking one might appear quite lengthy that is why we advise you to check the GMC website for information on how to the best registration that suits your specialization.

Alcohol Detox Program

chibueze uchegbu | February 12th, 2022

Are you in need of learning about the Detox program? worry no more this article is for you. As you are searching for it, we can think that you or any of your loved ones are suffering from alcohol addiction.

When you quit any addiction or substance abuse, you will also suffer from withdrawal symptoms as your body will not get the substance it is addicted to.

During those days, detoxification is necessary. You should opt for a reputed detoxification center to get the required medical attention and treatment. If you are searching for one, you should visit here.

For a detailed guide, we are here to guide you with the detoxification and alcohol addiction treatment program here.

Watching Out For Alcohol Rehab

From the moment you will check in to an alcohol rehab or detox program, you will be interviewed thoroughly about your addiction and your health. After that, you will be shifted to the medical detox.

After the detox program is over, you will be engaged in behavioral therapy, education sessions, family therapy, and a lot more in order to overcome alcoholism.

In most reputable programs, the rehabilitation process begins at the exact moment when the individual checks in.

Often the staff members of the center begin with having a complete intake questionnaire or interview of the individual.

It is done to get as much information as possible about the individual. It includes the nature of alcohol abuse and also any other co-occurring or underlying conditions.

As per the guidelines of the National Institute of Drug Addiction, the entire intake process is vital for the detoxification and rehabilitation process.

On the basis of the intake process, the treatment program is being customized for a particular individual patient who is suffering from alcohol addiction.

Alcohol Detox And Rehabilitation

For the treatment of alcoholism, the first step is to withdraw from alcohol. Often it is the most difficult part of the rehab physically.

It is because withdrawal from alcohol abuse can actually develop uncomfortable and even dangerous psychological and physical symptoms.

Physical Symptoms

The physical symptoms include;

  • Clamminess and sweating.
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat.

Psychological Symptoms

The psychological symptoms include;

Fever, hallucinations, and seizures are the most dangerous symptoms, which come with extreme levels of addiction withdrawal. Often, these are the part of a really severe withdrawal reaction known as DTs or delirium tremens.

You might be surprised to know that DTs could be life-threatening. That is the reason why experts and professionals always advise opting for a medical detoxification program. When you are planning to detox from alcohol, never think of doing it all alone.

Via medical detox, all these withdrawal symptoms can be managed in a professional and safer way. The detoxification includes medications along with other forms of treatments, which ease symptoms, along with making the entire detox process much safer and easier to bear.

Alcohol Addiction Treatment Types

Just after the individual who is suffering from alcohol addiction completes the detoxification program, the therapeutic treatment program starts.

There are also some programs where therapeutic treatment continues side by side with the detoxification program.

When we are talking about therapy, we must mention that therapeutic programs come in different forms. We are discussing them below.

Behavioral Therapy

Many reputed, research-based rehabilitation or detox programs use behavioral therapies. This type of treatment often includes both individual or group therapy for assisting people in understanding the triggers that are working behind the addiction.

It is also vital for learning the way those triggers need to be handled or avoided. In simple words, those individuals get some motivation here.

They all can work in order to develop coping skills and at the same time deal with all those triggers in much healthier ways.

A recent study has shown that behavioral therapy in combination with medical treatment and motivational theories can actually ensure a higher level of the ability to manage the alcoholism of an individual.

1: CBT Or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This particular type of therapy is all about assisting people in recognizing their own through patterns and also behavioral responses. This way, they will be able to learn to not only interrupt the responses but also substitute more positive behavior, particularly for those that include alcohol.

2: DBT Or Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Individuals with dual diagnoses mostly benefit from this particular form of therapy. It offers a way for managing alcoholism and also other disorders via motivational enhancement and behavioral skills.

3: Trauma-focused CBT

This is a specific type of CBT, which takes trauma, and also its effects on the behaviors into account.

As a result, this therapy enables individuals to build the connection between their behavior and their trauma. Plus, it also breaks the connection between the behavior and consuming alcohol.

4: Interpersonal Therapy

Developing a social network along with other support structures, which not only moderate loneliness and depression but also reduce other forms of emotional drivers of addictive behaviors, could strengthen an individual’s resistance to relapse.

Family And Marriage Therapy

Sometimes, family or any other relationship dynamic also contributes to the way an individual responds to alcohol addiction treatment.

Due to this, therapy sessions with the spouse or family of the individual offer an avenue of support in the entire recovery scenario.

First, a spouse or any of the family members might unknowingly enable the alcohol abuse of an individual through their response to the particular person who has developed an addiction.

When they will get to know and learn how they have contributed to the behaviors of the individual, the same family members can really change the patterns along with becoming reliable supporters of recovery.

Second, when the family joins the person during their therapy sessions, it will boost their self-esteem, and they will also get support. During treatment, giving a reminder to both of them that the individual who is suffering has some loving support is necessary.
