What is medical laboratory science?

chibueze uchegbu | December 28th, 2021

What is medical laboratory science? Here, everything you need to know about MLS is unveiled

We would generally attribute a headache to be a common symptom of stress. But before a doctor sends us off to the pharmacy, two things take place; a consultation and a diagnosis.
While in the consulting room, a patient is asked a series of questions regarding how they feel or will be asked to describe some out-of-place episodes which they have experienced.
This little piece of information helps the doctor make a dialectic diagnosis and at this point, the next line of action will be carrying out tests for accurate and proper diagnosis and treatment.
It is risky to begin medical treatment without ascertaining the cause of the illness. Doctors proceed with treatment, only after a test carried out in a laboratory by medical laboratory scientists has been performed.
The medical laboratory scientists are not the faces we see on a regular unless there is a need to conduct a test.
They are mostly in their laboratories working out something, beneficial to human health and the world at large.
At a crime scene, a detective works with the evidence presented and the ones omitted by sheer oversight to draw a conclusion and nail someone to the crime. Medical laboratory science can be likened to the detectives from the FBI.
While the latter combats crimes, the former curtails diseases by determining its cause and prescribing treatment.
On one hand, crime is on the rampage, on the other hand, peoples’ health has continued to deteriorate. A healthy population will assist in the fight against crimes.

Thus, understanding that medical laboratory scientists play a vital role in ensuring that our wholesomeness is restored, is indeed pertinent.[lwptoc]

What is Medical Laboratory Science?

Medical laboratory science provides clues that are crucial for the diagnosis and treatment of a disease. Medical laboratory scientists arrive at these clues by performing diagnostic testing of blood and body fluids in clinical laboratories. These clues are found in the human body.
It is a common saying that in finding a solution, one must find out the cause. Medical laboratory science seeks solutions and alternatives to a disease or injury by performing tests on the directives of a physician.
So before a treatment comes a diagnosis and before a diagnosis, clinical tests are carried out. Put together, medical laboratory science provides the answer to diseases suffered by patients, by identifying the cause through the visible signs and symptoms so as to arrive at the possible treatment.
Medical laboratory scientists are generalists. However, some of the scientists have areas of specialty.
These specialties include;
  • Bacteriology
  • Hematology
  • Clinical biochemistry
  • Coagulation
  • Microbiology
  • Histocompatibility
  • Cytogenesis
  • Toxicology
  • Virology
  • Mycology
  • Immunology
  • Electron microscopy
  • Parasitology
  • Cytopathology
  • Genetics
  • Immunohematology
  • Histopathology
  • IVF
Medical laboratory scientists do not spend much time with patients like physicians would, however, they initiate the decisions about diagnosis and treatments in patients to a level measured to be over 60%. They also assist in the maintenance of healthy lifestyles.

Roles of a Medical Laboratory Scientist

As stated earlier, medical laboratory scientists are all-rounders. Hence, they are experts in different areas and can perform multiple functions.
The primary function of an MLS is to analyze a variety of biological specimens with the use of microscopes and hematology analyzers incubators.
In general, medical laboratory scientists perform the following roles;
1. Perform, develop, evaluate, correlate, and assure accuracy and validity of laboratory information.
2. Direct and supervise clinical laboratory resources and operations.
3. Collaborate in diagnosis and treatment of patients.
 However, they perform specialist functions. These functions include;
  • Interpreting test results.
  • Testing control products.
  • Performing calibration.
  • Troubleshooting of instrumentation.
  • Performing statistical analyses to verify the accuracy and repeatability testing.
  • Data-logging.
  • Ensuring specimen quality.
  • The role of a medical laboratory scientist is dynamic, other roles include;
  • measuring blood cholesterol and blood sugar.
  • tests for anaemia.
  • checks the urine for protein.
  • identifies strep throat bacteria.
  • prepares blood for transfusion etc.
  • Medical laboratory scientists perform the following clinical tests;
  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)
  • Liver function tests (LFT)
  • Renal function tests (RFT)
  • Thyroid function test (TFT)
  • Urinalysis
  • Blood type
  • Lipid and Coagulation profile.
  • Serological studies.
  • Routine cultures etc.
Some of the frequently asked questions on medical laboratory science include;
  • Where does medical laboratory scientist work?
Medical laboratory scientists perform their roles in a laboratory and we would mostly associate a lab with a hospital.
However, MLS could work in research facilities, public health centres, Colleges, Industries, with the Armed forces, clinics etc.
At each of these workspaces, their roles may be all-encompassing or specific.
  • How long does it take to be a Medical Laboratory Scientist?

Medical laboratory science may take 4 to 5 years and that for an undergraduate degree. So spending the next 4 to 5 years identifying the cause of a disease and how to treat such diseases or injuries to ensure that there are healthier people is worthwhile.
  • How can I become a Medical laboratory scientist?
The first step to becoming a medical laboratory scientist is to focus your interest in biology or chemistry.
This is a head start. More so, it is important to note that being certified an MLS varies according to country.
In Nigeria for example, interested applicants must complete secondary school and must pass the West African Senior School Certificate Examination  (WASSCE), must sit and pass the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) as well as the University’s entry-level exam to be considered and admitted.
However, in most developed countries, applicants must complete a 4-year higher diploma in a related field before proceeding to acquire a bachelor’s degree.
Therefore, the requirements to becoming a certified MLS are;
 earn a bachelor’s degree.
gain clinical experience through internships.
get certified by relevant clinical bodies.
apply for a job.

Does Medical laboratory science require skills?

  • No profession is without a specific skill. For medical laboratory science, the following  are required;
  • Must be thorough, precise, and self-sufficient.
  • Should be emotionally stable.
  • Must be able to communicate well.
  • Should be able to carry out tasks meticulously and quickly.
  • Should be knowledgeable about basic sciences, the use of laboratory instrumentation, and computers.
  • Must possess problem-solving skills.

Conclusion on What is medical laboratory science?

A few personnel play pivotal roles in the healthcare system and each one works interdependently. Medical laboratory science is one and learning about their roles, work settings are indeed necessary.

How to become a Speech Therapist

Best route on How to become a Speech Therapist

chibueze uchegbu | December 17th, 2021

Do want to know How to become a Speech Therapist? don’t worry, you are among the lucky ones to come across this article.

Speech-Language therapists or speech-language pathologists as they are commonly called are part of the growing community of professionals dedicated to helping people with communication, swallowing, speech, expression, and cognitive-communication disorders.

In a world where a good number of people struggle to communicate properly, speech therapists are helping to integrate and develop a pathway for these people to communicate effectively with the rest of society. It is a job that springs more out of compassion and love than just the monetary gain.

In our update today, we shall be talking a lot about how to become a speech therapist, the job of a speech therapist as well as answering questions on what does speech therapists do?

Who is a Speech Therapist?

A speech therapist is many things in many ways. A speech therapist is a counselor and also a pathologist in everything that concerns speech and communication.

He/She helps both children and adults to overcome impediments in talking, drinking, swallowing, language, and other disorders in communication.

These disorders make it hard for the patient to comprehend information, especially in the classroom. It becomes extremely difficult to form friendships as a child and relate with others in a normal way.

What speech therapists do is identify the root cause of the problem then chart an implementable routine for the individual to fit in. They also identify early-stage symptoms then assess to identify high-risk children, then develop special education programs for them.

Speech pathologists remain an integral part of society especially in the school and educational system. They are mainly seen in the school setting.

How to Become a Speech Therapist

Even if you have the natural gift of becoming a speech therapist, it is still important you get trained to know the tents and ethics of the profession.

Those that make the best speech therapists are usually the naturally gifted ones and those with the skills and personal traits required in communicating with patients.

There are three common steps towards becoming a speech pathologist, we shall take it one step at a time.

Obtain a Bachelor’s Degree:

If you are going to excel in this profession you must start from the basics. The undergraduate level is where students are exposed to the general components involved in speech therapy.

They are introduced to the early knowledge and majors in communication sciences and disorders, linguistics, language development, education, psychology, and English.

Masters in SLP:

While a B.sc might have brought you closer to the sciences in speech pathology, you will still need a Master’s Degree to consolidate your knowledge of speech therapy.

Here, the students are involved in more practical approaches to the program which consists mainly of clinical experiments, internships in hospitals, schools, or special education centers.

The degree program dives deep into areas like physiology, anatomy, and language development. There will also be academic research works at this master’s level.

A master’s in speech and language pathology (SLP) takes an average of 2 years or a little above that to complete. At the end of the program, the graduates are issued either of the following

  • MS Communicative Sciences and Disorders
  • MS Speech-Language Pathology
  • MS Communication Sciences and Disorders, specialization in speech-language pathology.

Post-Graduate Fellowship:

Postgraduate fellowship is not mandatory for all M.sc holders to become licensed Speech Therapists.

It all depends on your state of residence or province legislation towards the profession. In some states, a Masters’s degree is enough to start practicing while others will require you to complete some core clinical post-graduate courses.

Students here are mentored by licensed therapists where they complete weeks and prescribed hours of clinical experiments and internships. You can be working as a resident speech therapist while also studying for a post-graduate fellowship.

In some states you can apply for a temporary license and practice with Masters’s degree, its renewal and full licensing is subject to completion of a post-graduate fellowship.

Licensing:

Licensing for SLPS is a process that varies by state and country. If you intend to practice in school, you will need to present a teaching degree certificate before you can obtain a license.

The accredited bodies like American Speech-Language-Hearing Association  (ASHA) for America or other recognized ones in other countries take care of this process. You will have to sit for the exam after which a license will be issued if you pass.

Speech and Language Therapists Skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Despite its small size, Malta is qualified to provide some of the best health services in the world. The World Health Organization ranked it 5th in general health care in more than 100 countries in Malta.

Recently, Numbo’s independent research on European countries found that Malta’s medical system ranks second in France and has the highest score.

Malta has a strong public healthcare system that provides services to all Maltese citizens and EU residents who hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

There are several public hospitals on the island, one of which is located on Gozo, and there is also a network of health clinics and pharmacies that provide prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment services.

Due to the small size of Malta, no matter where you live, you can easily go to the hospital or health clinic when you need it.

Both provide a wide range of services, from blood tests to diagnostic tests to complex surgeries. They boast of having the latest medical technology, such as 4D ultrasound, a complete digital radiology system, laser-assisted surgery, and spiral scanning of magnetic resonance, etc.

Both hospitals are known for their excellent specialist clinics. For example, Da Vinci Health has a number of clinics, including highly regarded breast care clinics, dentistry and orthopedics specialties.

The St. James Hospital Group has four art clinics and an 80-bed hospital, as well as prestigious ophthalmology.

France Healthcare System

France Healthcare System

chibueze uchegbu | December 17th, 2021

The things you should know about France Healthcare System are unveiled in this piece of write up

The French healthcare system is one of the most recognized healthcare systems globally in offering the best services to people. It provides a universal cover that virtually all residents in France keenly support.

Introduction to France’s Healthcare System

With the highly integrated network of public hospitals, doctors, and public healthcare facilities, the system is able to deliver top-notch services to people timely.

The system doesn’t discriminate with the class of people to offer the services to as all citizens, irrespective of age, wealth, and status, have access to this premium healthcare.

As a resident in France, you are covered via the mandatory health insurance contributions in the nation.

There’s optional private insurance available for anyone who wants some extra coverage. You don’t have to worry as the French Government covers well above 75% of the total health expenditure in the country.

In France, the responsibility of administrating public healthcare rests on the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, while different healthcare providers in the country handle primary and secondary healthcare services.

Are you looking for a country that focuses more on preventative healthcare services? France is that country you can always rest assured of. It offers regular medical checkups, addiction prevention, promotion of physical activity, and healthy consumption.

Who can have access to healthcare services in France?

If you are a resident of France, you can access healthcare services through French insurance contributions. But if you are a foreigner in the country, there’s a new healthcare system for you: the Protection Universelle Maladie (PUMA).

This special system enables you to access state healthcare after three years of staying in the country.

Legally, every resident needs to have some level of coverage for healthcare access, be it the state or private. In a situation where your income falls below a certain threshold, you may still be eligible for free commentary health insurance coverage.

If you are waiting for your legal residence to be finalized, you may still qualify for the State Medical Assistance. Also, if you are from EU/EEA/Switzerland, you can as well make use of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in place of any coverage in France.

Similarly, any retirees from the EU/EEA/ Switzerland relocating to France can access healthcare services by filling the social security form in their home country.

Healthcare Costs in France

Like many countries across the world, the French healthcare system is funded partially by obligatory social security contributions as stated earlier.

The money is deducted from peoples’ salary with employers paying around 13% of the salary while the employees are paying an approximately 8%.

Furthermore, the French Government also handles some aspects of the costs while the patients also require a smaller fragment of the cost in contribution to their healthcare costs.

The nation’s state health insurance takes up 70 – 100% of the costs for services, including doctor visits and hospital costs.

There’s 100% coverage for seeing a doctor or accessing healthcare services in any hospital in France for long-term sick patients. Interestingly, there’s no upfront demand from any healthcare personnel for accessing these services.

According to a recent report, France is one of the highest spenders on healthcare within the EU regarding percentage.

The country spends around 11.5% of GDP on healthcare provisions, thus coming holding a second position while Switzerland takes the first position (12.3%).

Public health insurance in France

France is one of the few countries that operate a co-payment system for public healthcare services. The state health insurance takes up the majority of the costs. However, the reimbursement of the money is dependent on the service offerings.

When you visit a doctor as a French resident, dentist, or any medical specialist, the coverage is 70%.

In comparison, the money reimburses for visiting a hospital when ill is around 80% of the total costs. For prescribed medications, you should expect the coverage to be 100%.

With the availability of a health card, you won’t be required to make any upfront payment. But if you don’t have one, you will have to make an upfront payment towards the medical fees at the point of service. Then the reimbursement will come in between five to 10 days after.

Pros of the French Healthcare System

  • The French healthcare system is very swift in terms of delivery. You won’t face the headache of waiting before you see a doctor or get treatments for a long time.
  • It is accessible to all residents of France, even if you are not a national of the country.
  • The system offers premium healthcare services, and it’s very affordable.
  • The healthcare services are available to you as an ex-pat once you’ve spent a period of three months or less in the country.
  • It doesn’t joke with preventive care as it is available for all residents of the country, which includes free checkups once every two years.
  • You don’t need a referral to see a specialist in France.

Cons of French Healthcare System

  • The nationals and those working in France have to pay a considerable amount in taxes to ensure they keep access to the universal healthcare system.
  • You won’t have access to public healthcare services during the first three months of your resident in the country. This means you will have to take out private health insurance during this time.

Closing thoughts on France Healthcare System

France’s healthcare system has continued to make marks in the lives of the people in the country as it offers premium healthcare services that stand shoulder to shoulder with any outstanding provisions across the world.

With taxes paid by people, the Government spends a decent amount of money on its mandatory healthcare services.

If you are a new resident of France or planning to move to the country, rest assured you won’t be breaking the bank to have access to top-notch healthcare services as the French Government is subsidizing the costs.
