What do you know about the pharmaceutical companies in Vermont? Today, we unravel the essentials you need to know.

More than 560 clinical trials of new medicines have been conducted by pharmaceutical companies in Vermont in collaboration with the state’s university medical school, clinical research centers, and hospitals (1999 to present).

365 of the more than 560 clinical trials target the six most debilitating chronic diseases in Vermont: asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental illnesses, and stroke.

Overview

Vermont is dedicated to good health for people, the environment, and institutions, which include schools, colleges and universities, businesses, and cities and communities.

The active research activity of pharmaceutical companies in Vermont—from Chittenden County to White River Junction, from Brattleboro to Bennington—is one significant health care effort that does not receive the attention it deserves.

Vermont Biosciences Alliance includes many of these institutions. Working frequently in collaboration with the NIH and the majority of major pharmaceutical companies, the research efforts contribute to the development of life-saving drugs, devices, and treatments.

A drug or a medical device cannot be developed by a single researcher or institution. Capital, talent, drive, initiative, and teamwork are all required.

Facts about pharmaceutical companies in Vermont

Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont have targeted disease wisely—well over half of the medications clinically tested in the state have targeted the nation’s most debilitating chronic diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and asthma.

Nearly half of those trials are still recruiting patients. These collaborations have occurred in Burlington with researchers from the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center.

  • Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont are currently conducting or have completed over 560 clinical trials of new medicines in collaboration with the state’s university medical school, clinical research centers, and hospitals (1999 to present).
  • 365 of the more than 560 clinical trials target the six most debilitating chronic diseases in the United States: asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental illnesses, and stroke.
  • Pharmaceutical companies have provided jobs, tax revenue, and research funding to Vermont.
  • According to a study conducted by BattelleTechnology Partnership Practice, the industry supported nearly 1,500 jobs in the state in 2011.
  • Wages and benefits for employees supported by the pharmaceutical sector resulted in approximately $11 million in federal taxation and $2 million in state and local taxes.
  • Pharmaceutical companies in Vermont contributed $267 million in economic activity to the state two years ago, including direct economic output, output from vendors and suppliers, and output generated by the purchasing power of its workforce.
  • Life sciences researchers, management executives, office and administrative support workers, production workers, engineers, architects, computer and math experts, and sales representatives are among the company employees in Vermont.
  • Pharmaceutical companies also supported the jobs of their vendors and suppliers, such as construction and information technology firms. Employees of pharmaceutical companies in Vermont also contribute to the success of local restaurants, daycare centers, and other community businesses.

Concerning Clinical Trials

  • Clinical trials are used in the development of new medicines to demonstrate therapeutic safety and effectiveness and to compile the evidence required for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve treatments.
  • Clinical trials for new drugs are conducted in three stages, accounting for an average of seven of the ten to fifteen years it takes to bring a new drug from development to patients.
  • Clinical trials for a specific drug or treatment entail thousands of volunteer patient participants and the collection of tens of thousands of pages of technical and scientific data.
  • Clinical trials account for 45 to 75 percent of the average $1.2 billion costs of developing a new cutting-edge biotechnology medicine.
  • The trials provide another potential therapeutic option for patients. Clinical tests may provide a new avenue of care for some chronic disease patients who are still looking for the best medicines for them.
  • Some trials are also carried out to compare existing treatments, while others are carried out to determine whether a drug is appropriate for a specific patient population, such as children.
  • Others are being conducted to find ways to make currently approved drugs more effective, easier to use, and with fewer side effects. An Institutional Review Board (IRB), an independent committee of physicians, statisticians, local community advocates, and others, must review and approve all clinical trials to ensure that they are conducted ethically and that patient rights are protected.
  • Clinical trial progress reports must be submitted to the FDA and IRB at least once a year.
  • All facilities that conduct or support biomedical research involving patients must follow federal regulations and have an IRB.

New Generation Medicines in the Works

Some of the drugs tested in Vermont are cutting-edge pharmaceutical drugs. Today, pharmaceutical companies in the United States are using biotechnology to develop hundreds of new medications and vaccines.

Vermont is one of the states conducting this research and development. Biotechnology is creating new ways to not only treat disease more effectively but also to predict and even prevent it.

Biotechnology medicines are created through biological processes that use living cells or organisms, as opposed to traditional chemical synthesis, which has been the mainstay of pharmaceutical development for decades. Novel treatments employ a variety of novel approaches to disease treatment.

A monoclonal antibody, for example, is a laboratory-created version of a naturally occurring immune system protein that binds to and neutralizes foreign invaders. Interferons are proteins that inhibit a cell’s ability to reproduce.

Meanwhile, antisense drugs are medications that disrupt the communication process that instructs a cell to produce an unwanted protein. Nanotechnology is also being used in biotechnology research to develop drug delivery systems, new treatments, and diagnostics.

These technologies are used in some of the medicines being tested in clinical trials at Vermont hospitals and research facilities.

In Colchester, for example, a monoclonal antibody for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is being tested. A recombinant fusion protein was studied in Burlington to treat age-related macular degeneration.

A monoclonal antibody targeting lymphoma is in clinical trials at Mountainview Medical in Berlin and Fletcher Allen Health Care Medical Center in Burlington.

The medicines and vaccines being developed today are helping to push science forward, which could lead to more and better treatments for patients.

This innovation in Vermont, as in other states, is the result of a successful collaboration between pharmaceutical companies and local research institutions.

Cancer hospitals in Florida

40 Top Cancer hospitals in Florida

chibueze uchegbu | May 12th, 2022

The primary purpose of cancer hospitals in Florida is to provide the most advanced cancer treatment, using cutting-edge technologies, in a setting where patients can be close to home and surrounded by family and friends.

Cancer hospitals in Florida and their physicians include leading area hospitals like the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Also, the Cancer hospitals in Florida provide patients with access to more national clinical trials than any other private oncology practice.

The hospitals are committed to providing world-class cancer care in community-based settings close to home, with qualified physicians, nurse practitioners, and clinical sites. Cancer hospitals in Florida serve patients from Naples to Tampa on the Gulf Coast, as far north as Gainesville, and as far east as Orlando in Central Florida.

Most Physicians have received training at prestigious medical schools and research institutes such as Duke, Stanford, Harvard, Emory, Yale, MD Anderson, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering; they serve as leaders and consultants in the state’s top hospitals.

Florida Cancer Treatment Plan

The overall goal of the Florida Cancer Plan is to provide a roadmap for reducing the cancer burden in Florida. Floridians will live longer and healthier lives as a result of healthy personal lifestyles, healthy families, healthy communities, and health-promoting systems that protect all people from cancer threats.

This Plan reflects the collective thinking and action of cancer stakeholders in Florida, both individuals, and organizations. It is a plan for all individuals and organizations in Florida who are concerned about the cancer burden.

Florida Cancer Plan was created through an inclusive process led by CCRAB that included many cancer stakeholders in the writing, providing input, reviewing, editing, and considering implementation roles.

Criteria were established to guide the selection of goals, objectives, and strategies that are impactful, measurable, and equitable.

CCRAB Council Members, the Florida Department of Health, the Regional Cancer Control Collaboratives, the Florida Prostate Cancer Advisory Council (PCAC), and many individuals and organizations from across the state all contributed.

Specialists in cancer prevention, early detection, and control, including the Florida Academic Cancer Center Alliance and the 15 organizations represented on CCRAB, reviewed the Florida Cancer Plan.

The CDC’s Cancer Plan Self-Assessment Tool and the National Academy of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s (NASEM) Consensus Report titled “Guiding Cancer Control” were used to evaluate and optimize the comprehensiveness of the Florida Cancer Plan.

Progress in Cancer Control in Florida and Opportunities for Improvement

CCRAB’s 40-year history of coordinated cancer prevention, early detection, and control has led up to this Florida Cancer Plan. Due to effective tobacco control and prevention campaigns over the last 20 years, the number of lung cancer cases in Florida has significantly decreased.

Over the last five years, more than 80% of older Florida women have reported using mammography for early detection of breast cancer when it is more likely to be curable. Also in the last five years, the state of Florida has provided much-needed funding for the state cancer registry and established the Live Like Bella Pediatric Cancer Initiative.

While there has been significant progress in cancer prevention and control in Florida, there are numerous opportunities to further reduce the state’s cancer burden.

The state cancer registry is completing pilot programs to capture more comprehensive case data, but identifying and archiving cancer screening data, molecular disease characteristics, treatment, and case outcomes are now required.

Our state cancer registry will be transformed from an archive to a data engine for comprehensive and proactive cancer surveillance as a result of this evolution.

Many Floridians are unable to access or participate in cancer screenings for lung cancer or colorectal cancer due to a variety of factors ranging from inability to get to the screening facility to a lack of health insurance coverage to being unaware that cancer screening is recommended.

Palliative care, end-of-life care, and survivor care are available in varying quantities and quality across the state.

In research funding, there is a significant disparity between the number of highly meritorious research proposals and the amount of support available to conduct impactful research.

Specific Floridian populations are at higher risk for cancer, but socioeconomic biases also disadvantage them in accessing cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, or treatment.

Florida can potentially eliminate certain cancers from its population, such as cervical cancer if it can expand a concerted effort that includes HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening by guidelines.

It is essential to know the Rehabilitation centers in Chennai since the number of young people becoming addicted to liquor and other intoxicating substances has become a global problem nowadays.

In Chennai, there are only a few rehabilitation institutions that offer comprehensive post-treatment care.

40 pharmaceutical companies in Iowa

chibueze uchegbu | May 9th, 2022

What do you know about the pharmaceutical companies in Iowa? Iowa boasts of miles of land, making it an ideal location for pharmaceutical companies, while medical schools such as the University of Iowa attract some of the country’s best STEM talent.

Pharmaceutical companies in Iowa are all located in this low-key but hardworking region. Microbiologics, Inc., AbbVie, Novartis, Strata Oncology, and Forge Biologics are among the companies working the fertile ground in this region.

McKesson Corporation, a pharmaceutical giant has decided to set up shop in Clear Lake. The $65 million project includes the hiring of 164 workers to operate the 340,000-square-foot warehouse. The California-based company will make a significant investment in Iowa.

Overview of pharmaceutical companies in Iowa

McKesson is headquartered in San Francisco and employs approximately 85,000 people. It was founded in 1883 and is one of the oldest companies in the United States. It is ranked #15 on the Fortune 500 list as of 2014.

McKesson is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in Iowa. McKesson is a leader in pharmaceutical distribution in the United States and Canada. McKesson Corporation delivers one-third of all pharmaceuticals used in Iowa.

According to the McKesson website, the company has an annual revenue of more than $137.6 billion and specializes in vital medicines, medical supplies, and health care information technology solutions.

Medicare, the federal health-care program for the elderly and disabled, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The occasion has sparked a flurry of debate about the program’s future — and more than a few calls for major changes to Part D, Medicare’s prescription drug benefit program.

There are growing calls for the federal government to intervene in drug-pricing negotiations between private insurers and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Such a change would be detrimental to Iowa’s seniors, severely limiting their access to critical medications.

Part D was added to Medicare in 2003; previously, Medicare did not cover the majority of prescription drugs.

And it operates differently than a typical government program. Insurance companies design and offer competing coverage plans in each state under Part D. Enrollees can choose the plan that best meets their medical and financial needs.

This level of choice and consumerism was intended to keep costs low while also providing seniors with options. And it was effective.

Despite initial claims that it would break the bank and bankrupt seniors, Medicare Part D turned out to be the rare government program that came in significantly under budget. Part D’s cost to taxpayers was predicted to exceed $122.88 billion in 2012. That year’s actual cost was only $55 billion.

Part D also provides Iowans with access to 30 prescription drug plans. Premiums in the state begin at $15.70.

Despite the variety of affordable options, there is a push in Washington to dismantle the program. Part D is too expensive, according to critics, and the government should intervene in price negotiations with drug manufacturers.

In November 2017, the Iowa State Association of Counties unanimously passed a resolution encouraging member counties to join in the litigation against pharmaceutical companies to hold them accountable for the country’s widespread opioid epidemic.

For downplaying the risks of opioids and aggressively marketing the drugs to treat chronic pain, 47 Iowa counties filed lawsuits against five pharmaceutical companies, their subsidiaries, and three physicians.

Story County is one of 53 unrepresented counties in the settlement, but it was asked to join to reach the maximum settlement value. A full settlement will result from municipalities’ full participation. The state will receive $143 million if all litigants, excluding Story County, participate.

Over the last two decades, the opioid epidemic has claimed the lives of over 500,000 Americans. According to Crueger Dickinson, a law firm representing Iowa counties, increased costs for counties have been linked to the crisis, including law enforcement, autopsies, and emergency medical services.

PIP vs Bodily Injury In A Car Accident Claim

PIP vs Bodily Injury In A Car Accident Claim

chibueze uchegbu | May 9th, 2022

Here are the essential things to note in PIP vs Bodily Injury In A Car Accident Claim.

Suppose you have been injured in a car accident. In that case, you probably know that you are supposed to file an insurance claim because insurance money will help you recover some of the expenses associated with the accident.

Insurance companies and personal injury attorneys can offer help calculating damages. There are several different types of accident insurance, and it is helpful to know which kind of insurance will pay your bills.

Medical bills will be paid for by either Personal Injury Protection insurance or bodily injury liability insurance.

PIP coverage pays for a driver’s medical bills. Liability insurance pays the bills of a driver who was injured in an accident due to the fault of another person.

Understanding Insurance Laws in Florida

There are two different types of insurance rules in the United States; fault and no-fault. In a fault or tort state, the driver who caused the accident is responsible for its associated bills.

In a no-fault state, such as Florida, a driver’s own insurance must pay for their bills no matter who caused the accident.  Hence in a fault state, you would file a  liability insurance claim, and in a no-fault state, you would file a PIP Claim.

Uninsured Drivers in the Tort States

If a driver in a tort state causes an accident and they do not have insurance, they will get a big ticket.

Although it may punish the uninsured driver, this does not do the injured person much good. Many tort states require drivers to have both PIP insurance and liability insurance. You must have uninsured motorist insurance if you live in one of the following fault states:

  • District of Columbia
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Maine
  • Maryland
  • Missouri
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • Oregon
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin

What if my injuries exceed the amount of insurance coverage?

A driver in the state of Florida is required to carry $10,000 of personal injury protection (PIP) insurance. They must also have $10,000 of property damage liability insurance.

The largest deductibles allowed are $1,000 for PIP coverage and $500 for property damage liability.

If your medical bills exceed the amount of money for which you are covered, the state will not necessarily allow you to sue the other driver.

However, if another driver was at fault for permanent injuries, you may be able to sue that driver. If the other driver was uninsured, you might be able to sue them as well. However, most attorneys would advise you not to sue a person who has no money.

If your accident happened out of state, and the other driver was insured in that state, you may be able to recover money from their insurance or sue them.

Your personal injury protection coverage will only cover you if you have an accident in the state of Florida. If you intend to drive in another state, you may want to buy both liability insurance and personal injury protection insurance for that state.

If you have an accident in another no-fault state, you may have to pay your own medical bills no matter who is at fault. The no-fault states are:

  • Florida
  • Hawaii
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Minnesota
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Pennsylvania
  • Utah

How to Make Sure You Get Paid

No matter what state you may live or operate a vehicle in, an insurance company is certain to try to lowball you when you file an insurance claim.

It is the job of an insurance adjuster to keep the company’s money in-house. It is very important to document your expenses carefully and act in a timely fashion.

  • What to do at the Scene

When you have an accident, you should pull over to the side of the road and find out if anyone is hurt. Call the police and wait for them to arrive. Take pictures of the accident scene if you can, and get the names and numbers of anyone who might have seen the crash.

If an ambulance arrives at the scene, take any treatment that the EMTs offer and go to the hospital if they tell you to. You should always go to the doctor even if you do not think you have been injured.

There are some injuries that you may not be able to feel right away. Some of them can be very serious.

Save copies of every medical bill you get, including physical therapy. You should also save the bills for alternative treatments such as massages or flotation therapy. Save the receipts from medications that you take as well.

Document expenses you have for help around the house or childcare. If you are unable to drive after an accident, save the receipts for taxis and ride-sharing services. Get a letter from your employer stating the number of hours that you have missed from work.

Dealing With the Insurance Company

You should report your accident to your insurance company as soon as possible. The sooner you turn in your documentation, the sooner the investigation of the accident will begin.

When the investigation is complete, the insurance company will accept or deny your claim. If they accept the claim, they will make you a settlement offer. Talk to a personal injury attorney before you accept the claim.

The first offer an insurance company makes is likely to be too low. An injury attorney can negotiate with the insurance company and get you a better offer. If you have to take the insurance company to court, the attorney will be able to represent you.

No matter what kind of insurance you have, you want to get the most compensation that you can. Insurance is expensive, and you should be able to use it when you need it.

A fair settlement won’t make the pain go away completely, but it will help you heal. When you can afford the best medical care, you will be better able to get on with your life.

 What is nursing?

The nursing profession is quite a diversified one. Nursing is said to be a profession whose cardinal responsibilities are to care for individuals, families, and communities so they may attain, maintain, or recover optimal health and quality of life.

Nurses practice in many specialties with differing levels of prescription authority. Nurses comprise the largest component of most healthcare environments, but there is evidence of international shortages of qualified nurses.

They are however permitted by most jurisdictions to practice independently in a variety of settings. Since the postwar period, nurse education has undergone a process of diversification towards advanced and specialized credentials, and many of the traditional regulations and provider roles are changing.

Nurses develop a plan of care, working collaboratively with physicians, therapists, the patient, the patient’s family, and other team members that focus on treating illness to improve quality of life.

In the United Kingdom and the United States, for instance, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners, diagnose health problems and prescribe the correct medications and other therapies, depending on particular state regulations.

Nurses provide care both interdependently, for example, with physicians, and independently as nursing professionals. In addition to providing care and support, nurses educate the public and promote health and wellness.

10 massage therapy schools in michigan

chibueze uchegbu | May 8th, 2022

There are different massage therapy schools in Michigan. A student attending a massage therapy school in Michigan may expect to learn the fundamentals and potentially much more.

Michigan establishes basic educational criteria that are comparable to those in many other states. Michigan standards also have a strong resemblance to the initial criteria of a well-known national certification agency. Certain schools go above and beyond what is required.

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body by a trained and qualified practitioner.

These soft tissues include muscle, connective tissue, ligaments, tendons, and the skin. They employ a variety of pressure and movement techniques. Additionally, massage therapists play a critical role in assisting individuals in caring for their bodies and general health.

Massage is regarded to be a component of integrated medicine, as medical centers increasingly offer it in conjunction with regular therapy for a wide variety of medical issues.

Read attentively to have a better understanding of the many types of massage programs available in Michigan and the institutions that provide them.

Minimum Standards for Massage Therapy Programs

Students in Michigan must finish programs totaling at least 500 hours. They must incorporate the following educational components:

  • 200 hours of teaching in the theory, technique, and evaluation of massage/bodywork
  • Anatomy, kinesiology, and physiology 125 hours
  • 40 hours of pathology
  • Work in a student clinic for 40 hours
  • Six hours dedicated to ethics
  • 4 hours of professional/business practice
  • The remaining hours must be spent in areas linked to massage treatment – this allows for considerable latitude.

The majority of the aforementioned components are specified as prerequisites for the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork to award a testing code.

Students contemplating NCBTMB programs outside of Michigan, however, should enquire about some components, most notably the number of hours spent in a student clinic.

Numerous programs in Michigan have been granted NCBTMB codes; the NCBTMB website currently lists 17. Programs are offered at a range of locations, ranging from community colleges to naturopathic institutes.

Options / Alternatives for Massage School Programs

Certain massage therapy schools specialize in one area (for example, “Clinical Acupressure and TuiNa”). Others are omnivores.

In some programs, the whole curriculum is set; all students attend lessons in the same modalities and spend the same amount of time studying certain illnesses and demographics. However, schools may allow for some electives.

Infant massage, musculoskeletal problems, trigger point therapy, and hot rock massage are all possible services. While some Michigan programs are 500 hours in length, others are 700 to 800 hours. The pace varies. A student may attend 100 or more hours of teaching and training per month on average – or may choose a much slower pace.

The institution may provide or demand far more than the 40 clinic hours necessary for licensure in Michigan. Students may be able to participate in a variety of activities at the clinic, such as prenatal massage.

Among the other factors to consider are graduate programs. The school may provide career development courses or workshops. In other situations, the school’s relationships with local companies – and its reputation – may assist students in launching careers.

Getting Ready for a Massage Program in Michigan

To get licensing in Michigan, an individual must have completed high school or earned a GED. Schools may require prospective students to show proof of diploma possession or, if they have not yet graduated, that they are on course to do so.

Other fundamental academic requirements may be imposed by programs housed in college environments (e.g. test scores).

  • Massage Therapists who study or work outside Michigan

With so many institutions, students are sure to find what they’re looking for without having to go far. Individuals can seek their initial education nearly anywhere and still qualify for licensing in Michigan as long as the education fulfills all state code criteria.

Even graduates of abroad programs have received information from the licensing agency (notwithstanding that they will have some extra steps to demonstrate equivalency).

It cannot be guaranteed that compliance with Michigan criteria will result in licensing in all states. While the criteria are comparable to those in many other states, they are not as high as others and certainly not as high as those recommended for entry-level positions.

  • Adjunct Board Certification Education

Individuals seeking national board certification ought to be aware that while 500 hours of instruction from a designated institution provides a foundation, more education will be required before certification.

If the prescribed program has a duration of between 500 and 750 hours, the gap can be made up by continuing education.

Numerous diverse continuing education courses are available via NCBTMB-accredited providers in Michigan, ranging from reflexology and energy work to back pain and TMJD/headache therapies.

Massage therapists frequently enroll in lengthy blocks of continuing education focused on certain techniques and demographics.

They may attend conferences in Michigan or elsewhere in the country; while attendees may receive only an hour or two of continuing education for each selection, they will leave having completed several mini-courses.

A Michigan conference includes sessions on building compassion and understanding in healthcare.

Siena Heights University in Adrian is one of only two colleges in the United States that offers college credit for board certification; credits can be transferred toward a bachelor’s degree in massage therapy. This option is recommended for students who already have college/transfer credit.

  • Career Prospects and Average Salary

With a median hourly compensation of $19.36, the Michigan metropolitan region with the largest total number of massage therapists – the Detroit/Warren/Dearborn metropolitan district – is also fairly close to the national average in terms of salary.

The Northwest Lower Peninsula and the Grand Rapids metropolitan region, which connects Michigan and Wyoming, have the highest average incomes in the state; massage therapists in these locations earn a median pay of approximately $25.

Certain nonmetropolitan Peninsula regions have earnings that are much lower than the state average.

Even in these settings, however, some massage therapists earn a comfortable living. While the median wage in the Upper Peninsula’s nonmetropolitan area is only $9.45, massage therapists in the 75th percentile make $27.31. There appear to be possibilities for those with ability and savvy!

The Lansing-East Lansing area is somewhat less expensive than the national average, with a median price of $17.05. One major plus is the 10th percentile pay of $10.29, which is comparable to, or somewhat higher than, the average wage in several sections of the state.
