5 simple steps for moving up in your nursing career

chibueze uchegbu | February 9th, 2022

A career in nursing will be demanding. You may have the heart to help people, but be realistic about what you expect from life.

A career in nursing is one of the hardest in the world. The workload, the emotional stress, and physical demands of the job can make it extremely difficult for some people.

5 simple steps for moving up in your nursing career; Overview

Moreover, climbing to the top can be somewhat of a struggle if you fall victim to the job’s trials. There will be curves in the road, but you need to overcome them and plod along.

Growth is a significant part of any career; however, actually moving up and gaining the promotions you deserve is complicated.

This article aims to help you grow in your career and allow you to gain the most out of your job. By the end, you should have a better idea about how to climb the ladder of success.

Here are some simple steps to move up in your nursing career.

Using your education to climb the ladder

Education or lack thereof is a critical obstacle that impedes you from climbing the corporate ladder. Employers want to see your academic credentials, but they expect you to practice what you’ve learned in the working environment.

This is easier said than done in a nursing career because studying alongside a full-time job can be highly stressful. Usually, a BSN degree in nursing is the stepping stone towards higher roles, but it demands time.

You may be wondering ‘How Long it Takes To Go From an ADN to BSN,’ the truth is, it depends on you.

If you’re working a full-time job as a nurse and opting for part-time study, it will take longer. But, if you can devote time and enroll in a full-time degree, you might have a better chance of finishing sooner and climbing up the ranks in a hospital.

One of the main things potential employers look for in a nurse is education and experience. Without a higher degree, you won’t have the right skills to qualify for the following position.

Practice empathy

Remaining empathetic with your patients, even if they’re complicated, makes for a good nurse. You will be surprised to note how many patients take note of how the staff behaves.

It takes one happy patient to put in a good word with the management and acts as a feather in your hat when it comes to the chance of a potential promotion.

Practicing empathy, understanding their issues, and feeling their pain can give you the connection you need with the patients.

You need to understand that these people are confused, scared, and irritated in their current situation. Be empathetic with your patients and do whatever you can for them.

Their comments on the feedback forms could go a long way in helping you grow through your career. Some clients/patients will go the extra mile and voluntarily talk to the management about you, which is enough for the administration to consider you for a higher role.

Help other colleagues

Nurses need to be helpful to one another. Since many don’t spend enough time with their families, they rely on you as a source of emotional support for them.

Listening to their struggles, covering their shift (if you can), and helping them with run-of-the-mill hospital tasks are just some of the things you can do to make their lives a bit easier.

Being there for your colleagues isn’t just limited to the healthcare industry; it’s all-encompassing. Lending a helping hand and being there for your colleagues always sets a good impression on the higher management.

Being a team player and an all-around great person is something the management usually notices without your knowing.

The nursing industry is one of the most challenging, so make things easier for someone if you can. Even if you aren’t benefitting, it’s always great to practice altruism.

Put on a smile

You knew what you were getting yourself into since your early days in nursing school. So, know that you signed up for this when the going gets tough.

Therefore, stressing out, looking upset, and taking days off might not be the best way to sell yourself.
It’s hard for everyone, but you need to be different. Get to work and put a smile on your face.

We understand how hard it can be to plod along through the mental and physical exhaustion, but frowning through the day isn’t going to make things easier.

Supervisors/managers look at how you’re handling the stress. If you can’t handle the current load, don’t expect to grow and be assigned new tasks in the future.

Employers are always looking for people who can juggle their tasks and not let stress get to them.

Dress nice, show up on time and don’t take days off

As a nurse, you want to ensure you’re there to tend to the influx of patients throughout the day. A neat, clean and timely nurse is irreplaceable in the healthcare sector.

Everyone appreciates someone who can handle their responsibilities and not look like they’ve been to hell and back doing so.

Showing up on time, dressing well, and not taking too many days off shows how committed you are to your duties and how well you can work in a hospital setting.

Appearance is everything in a job, and it is flawed logic to assume it would be different in a hospital.

Conclusion

That brings us to the end of this topic. The tips and tricks mentioned above will help you grow in your field and achieve more than mediocrity.

We’ve talked about the importance of education and covered factors relating to your dressing, punctuality, and supporting your colleagues.

All these factors, when combined, create the perfect image of a nurse destined to climb higher and achieve something great.

Pharmaceutical Companies in Cambodia

Best list of Pharmaceutical Companies in Cambodia

chibueze uchegbu | February 8th, 2022

Pharmaceutical Companies in Cambodia are divided into a  variety of providers, including public health centers, pharmacies, private hospitals, and professional medical service providers.

The latter usually operate from their facilities or travel directly to the patient’s homes. Private providers and qualified pharmacies are mostly present in urban areas.

Two-thirds of public health workers also work separately in some private capacity. In addition, several health centers and charity hospitals run by NGOs offer services.

Pharmaceutical Companies in Cambodia; An Overview

As of June 2019, Cambodia had 2,803 registered pharmacies, 446 drug import/export companies and branches, and 19 medical manufacturing facilities. Markets and traditional midwives and traditional healers.

In 2017, the Cambodian market spent around US$1.1 billion on universal healthcare and US$296 million on pharmaceuticals.

The public sector plays a leading role in the promotion and prevention activities for basic reproductive, maternal, neonatal, and pediatric health and control of major communicable diseases. However, private doctors remain popular for curative care.

According to the 2014 Cambodia Demographic and Health Survey, only 21.9% of sick or injured patients first sought help from public sector facilities, while 67.1% did so from private healthcare providers.

Within the private sector, private pharmacies in urban areas were the most frequent sources of treatment (60%) and clinics were the most common source in rural areas (23.5%).

Most high-income people and some middle-income people seek medical treatment abroad for complex cases or emergencies, mainly in Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore.

Only companies authorized by the Ministry of Health are allowed to import medicines, medical supplies, or medical devices.

As of June 2018, Cambodia had 2,516 registered pharmacies, 405 drug import/export companies and branches, and 19 medical manufacturing facilities. In addition to the formal market, there is a gray market for contraband medicines, which are often counterfeit.

 Best Prospects Subsector

The Department of Health is the single largest purchaser of pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and medical equipment, but the share of healthcare provided by the private sector is increasing.

Several new private hospitals and clinics have opened in recent years and more are expected in the future, offering potential opportunities for the sale of medical supplies and equipment.

Health insurance aimed at the growing middle class would meet unmet demand as governmental and non-governmental organizations increasingly target the poorest sections of the population, and the wealthiest sections of the population buy policies from international insurance companies. SMEs, on the other hand, have relatively few reliable insurance offers.

Opportunities

With US-made drugs and medical devices being well received here, there is great potential to increase market share. Large local pharmaceutical importers are eager to import US-made products.

Conclusion

As of June 2016, Cambodia had 13 pharmaceutical companies to supply local and overseas markets.

The volume of imported medicines has increased over the past years and is expected to continue to increase.

While drug spending was reported to be around $250 million in 2015, some practitioners expect it to surpass $400 million in 2021.

Some European companies such as DKSH (Switzerland), Bayer (Germany), Sanofi (France), or GlaxoSmithKline (UK) are already based in Cambodia.

The country welcomes more pharmaceutical companies such as  Indian group VTSIX, which has set up a factory in Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone (PPSEZ).

Other big players include Zuellig Pharma (part of  Hong Kong-based Zuelling Group) and  Cambodian  Pharma Product Manufacturing (PPM) Company.

Playing games can be a good source for your mental exercise

Playing games can be a good source for your mental exercise – How?

chibueze uchegbu | February 8th, 2022

Playing games can be a good source for your mental exercise – How?

Usually, people think that playing games are a waste of time and mental health.  Well, excessive playtime of some games can indeed be harmful to kids, but not all games have bad impacts on mental health.

Some games are considered a good source of exercise for both kids and adults.  Yes!  Scientific research has shown that certain brain games like puzzles, Sudoku, and chess have many health benefits.

If you want to know how playing games can be a good source of mental exercise, then we would suggest you read about the benefits we have discussed below:

How is playing games helpful for mental health?

Here are some of the reasons why mental games are considered to be helpful:

  • Games can help in mental stimulation

Playing brain games is considered very beneficial because almost every part of your brain is working in the process.

When you are playing a game, your brain receives a higher level of thinking, and this is because every nerve is functioning at that moment.

Mental stimulation depends on the game you are applying.  Playing games is not all about having fun, but it also involves strategizing analysis and thinking skills.

  • Games provide a feeling of accomplishment

When playing a game, there is always a goal or objective behind it.  So when you complete different levels, they would also feel a sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Feeling of accomplishment in games helps you in the player’s overall well-being.  Getting trophies, points, or badges in games makes a young player happy!  Virtual achievements can change a person’s mindset and help them perform well in life too!

  • Games make you emotionally resilient

Playing games is also considered an exercise because it helps you become emotionally resilient.  Games would not always provide you with a sense of accomplishment; sometimes, you face failure.

Failure in games can be frustrating, but it helps you train your mind to be calm and positive when you face failure in real life.

When you fail in a game, you try again, which is what it teaches you.  No matter how many times you fail in life, you have to keep trying again.

  • Games help in mental health recovery

A very big benefit of playing brain games today is contributing to mental health recovery.  Playing different mind games can easily help a person recover from mental trauma.

This is why you would see today that health experts would usually recommend playing relaxing games to people going through depression, anxiety, trauma, or any stressful situation.

You would be surprised to know that more than hundreds of dedicated anti-stress games applications on the web offer different kinds of games for stress release and satisfaction.

  • Games provide improved social Interactions

Games are also a source of social interactions.  When you are playing multiplayer games, your brain automatically learns cooperation.

As a person, it makes your mind more confident and helps you in real-time social interactions.  A person playing multiplayer games would feel easier to build relationships with new people than those who don’t show interest in games and are bookworms!

  • Games help you release stress

Playing games is one of the easiest ways of reducing stress.  You can find multiple antistress games that can help you calm your mind.

Antistress games can help users take their minds off stressful events and strengthen the mind.  Mind relaxing games are considered to be very beneficial for boosting mood.  It doesn’t matter whether you are a kid or an adult; antistress games can easily cheer you up!

Game application for brain exercise!

Today you don’t have to create a gaming den for brain exercise, and you certainly don’t have to make time for playing games.

This is because today, you have your gaming world at your fingertips.  You can install any game you like on your mobile phone and play it whenever you want.

You can easily try the Antistress- Relaxing games app if you feel exhausted and stressed out because of uncertain events.

This application provides more than fifty different mind-satisfying games under one digital roof.  On this game app, you will find mission-based, musical, mind-relaxing, and all kinds of games that can exercise your mind.

The game is free to play and is best for people of all ages.  Even a kid can enjoy playing different games offered by the app.

End words

It is high time that everyone should become aware of the positive effects of playing games on a player’s mind.

Certain games promote violence and are not good for a child’s mental health, but that doesn’t mean that all games are a complete waste of time.

In our opinion, the monitored playing of games should be promoted for the better mental growth of kids!

causes of birth defects

Causes of Birth Defects

chibueze uchegbu | February 7th, 2022

Let us take a look at the causes of birth defects. Birth defects are a common disorder that happens while a baby develops in the mother’s body.

Many things have been attributed to this problem. This defect isn’t a rare thing as it is reported that 1 in every 33 neonates given birth to in the US is born with a birth defect.

The defect affects the physical characteristic of the baby as it may affect the body composition and how it appears.

A cleft lip is an example of a common congenital disability that is common in the society today. Also, there are defects such as heart diseases found while conducting some tests.

Birth defects can range from mild to chronic ones, depending on the diagnosis of the medical personnel.

Causes of birth defect

In this piece, we’ve compiled some causes of birth defects in the neonate. Please read on to find out more!

Infection during Pregnancy

One of the major causes of birth defects is infection during pregnancy. Mild infections that wouldn’t even cause any infections in an adult could result in birth-defect causing infections during pregnancy.

You should watch out for any type of infection when you’re pregnant because it could lead to many undesirable things if left untreated.

Even if the infection doesn’t cause loss of pregnancy or stillbirth, it can still result in low birth weight and dysfunction of vital organs in the body.

This means early detection is your best shot at dealing with infection during pregnancy. Also, you can take a couple of steps to avoid infection when expecting a baby; you can go for vaccination and other recommended measures by your physician.

Genetic makeup

Another factor that could contribute to birth defects is the genetic makeup of both parents. Say, for example, the mother is a carrier of a particular disorder, and the same goes for the father, too, then the possibility of the neonate expressing the condition is pretty high.

When you’re a carrier of a particular illness, you won’t express it, and you also won’t know this except you get screened for that particular disorder.

But in a situation, your spouse is a also a carrier of the same disorder, that’s why the trouble lies.

So it’s always advisable for expecting mothers to get screened for a couple of disorders to know their status.

If they’re carriers of some conditions, they get treated and place of maximum care to save the baby from developing such illness.

Lifestyle choices and behaviours

You also need to know that lifestyle choices are a factor that must be carefully looked into if you’re a pregnant woman.

There have been many reports on the disadvantages of smoking while pregnant, and sadly, many expecting mothers are into this.

Excessive smoking increases the chances of abnormalities in newly born babies. According to many researchers, tens of hundred babies are born with one defect or the other as a result of their mother’s smoking lifestyle.

Surprisingly, there’s a report online that the more an expecting mother smokes, the smaller the baby becomes, which ensures ease of delivery.

This is not only a baseless report but an attempt to ruin the quality of life the unborn generation will have.

When you smoke excessively when pregnant, you’re stylishly threatening the lives of the unborn generation.

Excessive smoking can result in deformed limbs and facial malformation in babies and to the smoking mother, you’re reducing the chances of your easy delivery without you even knowing.

Exposure to certain drugs

You also need to be careful of medication if you’re an expecting mother. It’s said that more than 50% of ladies take prescription or non-prescription drugs or use social drugs when they are pregnant.

This actually increases the risk of the baby developing some form of abnormalities if not taken care of.

You must avoid all kinds of drugs when you’re pregnant, except if the physician recommends it for you. If used, drugs can result in irreparable damages to the fetus.

A recent report even corroborates that about 3% of the drugs taken resulted in a disorder in the neonate. Hence, it’s in the best interest of any expecting mother to avoid using drugs indiscriminately.

Lack of certain nutrients

When a pregnant woman lacks essential nutrients in the body, the chances of having child defects increase.

This is because pregnancy is a critical period in which women need to always consume a balanced diet – food rich in necessary nutrients.

Specifically, there’s a need for the expecting mother to take in as many as possible vitamins to supplement the ever-in-use ones in the system. This way, there’s maximum support for the developing fetus.

In addition to adequate weight gain during pregnancy, eating healthy meals also ensures free delivery with no complications.

Final Thoughts

Birth defects are conditions caused as a result of genetic and environmental factors or a combination of both.

The disorder caused may be life-threatening or mild in nature depending on the causative factor and the resultant illness.

Lowering the chances of having birth defects is a must-do activity for every expecting mother. A pregnant woman should stay healthy at all times by ensuring adequate consumption of food- enough quality and quantity.

As a woman who’s old enough to conceive, you’ve got to always be on alert to know as soon as possible once you’re pregnant.

This way, you’ll be able to watch your diet as this first semester is always a very critical stage in the development of a child. If taken care of well, birth defects’ risks are reduced to the barest minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions on Causes of Birth Defects

Below are a couple of frequently asked questions on causes of birth defects:

What are the most common birth defects?

There are many birth defects in existence with heart defects; cleft lip and palate are the commonest ones. Other defects are spinal muscular atrophy, turner syndrome, tuberous sclerosis and many more.

What defects can be detected before birth?

Despite the fact that many birth defects are only known when the expecting mother finally gives birth, there are also ones that can be detected even before the child’s birth.

Some of such conditions include hemophilia A, cystic fibrosis, polycystic kidney diseases, sickle cell disease and a couple of others.

What trimester do most birth defects occur?

You should take good care of your health throughout the pregnancy period as an expecting mother, as birth defects can occur in any of the trimesters.

But it’s very common within the first trimester as the development of the child takes place at this stage.

In the first three months of pregnancy, it’s reported the development of vital organs and all parts are taking place at this level.

So consuming the necessary protein, vitamins, and carbohydrates are critical to a safe and healthy delivery. Also, the defects can also be noticed in the last part of the pregnancy.

How do I know my fetus is doing well?

With the use of an ultrasound scan, which is a device that uses high-frequency sound waves to make images of the internal organs in the body, you’ll get to know how well your fetus is doing. The screening helps check the fetal growth if it’s normal and estimates your due date.

You can go for an ultrasound scan any time within the pregnancy period to know the status of the fetus and all organs in the body.

Can one prevent birth defects?

There are a couple of ways you can protect your neonates from having any defects, but total prevention of birth defects is impossible.

All thanks to the advent of technology, there are ways through which birth defects or any fetal conditions can be treated now.

The healthcare sector has been revolutionized with technological advancement. Affect babies can now survive and lead qualities lives thereafter.

Health insurance in Washington State

Health insurance in Washington State

chibueze uchegbu | February 7th, 2022

If you’re seeking information about health insurance in Washington state (not Washington, D.C.), then you’re in the right place.

Washington stands out as one of the first states to have a state-based health insurance program since the year 2011.

Residents can use the exchange to enroll in private health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (known as Obamacare) as well as public health coverage via Medicaid.

Choosing an insurance plan that meets your needs can be very cumbersome. The first step is to understand the difference between public health insurance vs. private health insurance. Which one is right for you?

Overall, most Americans are enrolled in a private health insurance plan, according to the US Census Bureau.

The rest may have health coverage through a public or government program like Medicaid or Medicare.

Employer-based coverage continues to be the most common, followed by 19% of Americans with Medicaid and 17% with Medicare.

Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance can be said to be any health insurance coverage that is offered by a private entity instead of a state or federal government. Insurance brokers and companies both fall into this category.

Here below are ways through which you can enroll in a private plan:

  • Licensed agents, such as e-Health
  • Health insurance offered through an employer (such as a group health plan)
  • Federal or state market place plans

Some private health insurance plans offer benefits that meet the minimum coverage requirements of the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare). Other plans might offer different benefits, such as short-term or catastrophic coverage.

These plans may not count as private health insurance options, such as short-term plans and catastrophic coverage, may offer different benefits, but may not count as a qualified Health Plan under the Affordable Care Act.

Until 4 years ago, you might have had to pay a tax penalty if you had a plan that did not count as qualifying coverage. As at 2019, that penalty no longer exists.

Public vs. Private Health Insurance

Public health insurance is a choice for some Americans and includes these options:

Medicare:  federal program for adults over the age of 65 and certain disabled people.

Medicaid: a state-run public health insurance program that caters to low-income individuals.

The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a subset of Medicaid, which offers a highly subsidized low- or no-cost health insurance for children.

There are specialized brokers to help you find plans in any state, as well as a wide range of plans and a variety of services to help you manage your healthcare coverage.

Types of private insurance

Another difference between public and private insurance is the various types of private insurance plans that are available.

  • Enroll in a group plan through an employer
  • Select your own private plan through licensed agents at eHealth
  • Choose a plan through the state or federal marketplace
  • Enroll in short term coverage if you qualify

Finding the best health insurance coverage in Washington State

The best health insurance coverage you can go for will depend on your income bracket and medical needs.

Besides individual health insurance, Washington offers Medicaid coverage through its Apple Health program.

Furthermore, the state has passed legislation that expands Medicaid coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Households with incomes that fall below the federal poverty level can sign up for the federal government funded health care.

Before choosing a plan, make sure you analyze the premiums and deductibles for each tier and make your decision based on affordability bearing in mind your income level and savings.

Below, we have provided an in-depth look at each metal tier and broken down situations in which they make the most sense.

Start with Silver plans

It is best you start your search with Silver plans, as these policies have moderate premiums and deductibles. This policy would work best in most situations unless you are very healthy or expect a number of expensive medical bills.

In that case, Bronze or Gold coverage may work better for you. Silver policies are the only health insurance plans that offer cost-sharing reductions if your income is below the federal poverty level.

A cost-sharing reduction is an added benefit that decreases the amount you pay for co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles. For this reason, Silver tier policies can sometimes be the most cost-effective plan offered on the health insurance exchange.

Bronze: Best for young, healthy individuals

Bronze plans are the cheapest plans offered on the Washington Health plan finder marketplace. Even though these plans have a low premium, they have high deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums, which make reaching the co-insurance level difficult.

For this reason, Bronze tier policies are best if you are healthy and want coverage in case of an extremely expensive, unexpected medical expense. Bronze plans are available to anyone in Washington.

Gold plans: Best if you have high medical expenses

The top and most expensive tier offered in Washington is Gold. These plans works best if you expect to have high medical costs during the year in view.

In this case, since the deductible is the lowest available, you would be able to reach it quickly and then have access to co-insurance with your health plan provider.

Private Health insurance in Washington State

How Much Does Private Health Insurance Cost? Insurance companies decide on premiums based on several factors.

These include:

Your age: The older we are, the more likely we are to need healthcare. To account for this, insurance companies charge higher premiums to older plan members.

Whether you use tobacco: Smoking and using tobacco increases the risk of developing health issues.

Your location: Where you live has an impact on your health. It also impacts how much competition there is among insurance companies and how expensive it is to provide healthcare.

The number of people on your plan: An individual plan is less expensive than a family plan.

Insurance companies can’t charge you a higher premium based on your gender or on your specific health history. You can’t be charged a higher rate if you have diabetes, for example.

Many people get private health insurance through an employer. Employers typically pay for part of the costs of health insurance and employees pay for the rest.

Employees paid an average of $1,427 annually for individual coverage in 2018, according to The Commonwealth Fund.

They paid an average of $5,431 for a family plan. This comes to $118 per month for an individual plan and $452 per month for a family plan.

Private health insurance purchased on your own (not through an employer) is significantly more expensive.

According to eHealth Insurance, the average cost of an individual plan purchased on your own is $440 per month. The average cost of a family plan is $1,168. This comes to $5,280 per year for an individual and $14,016 per year for a family.

The first step to finding affordable health insurance is getting multiple quotes. There are sites that have a simple tool that allows you to get quotes fast by entering your ZIP code.

As you review your quotes, keep in mind that every insurance company determines its rates differently. The cost of health insurance is about more than just your premium, though. Here are a few other costs to consider:

Deductible: Your deductible has a big influence on your health costs. Your deductible is the amount you pay for covered health care before your plan starts paying.  The average deductible in 2018 was $4,328 for an individual plan and $8.352 for a family plan, according to eHealth Insurance.

Copayment: Your copayment, or copay, is a fixed amount you pay for a service. You might have  $10 copay for a doctor’s visit and a $20 copay for a specialist visit.

Coinsurance: Coinsurance is like a copay, but instead of paying a fixed amount, you pay a percentage of the cost. If your plan has a coinsurance of 20% and your doctor visit costs $200, you would pay $40.

Out-of-pocket maximum: Your out-of-pocket maximum is the most you would pay out-of-pocket in a year.

This total doesn’t include your premiums. Plans sold on your state’s health insurance Marketplace have a maximum out-of-pocket limit of $8,200 for individual plans as of 2020. The maximum out-of-pocket limit for family plans is $16,400.

HMO vs. PPO vs. EPO vs. POS

Another factor to consider when it comes to how to get health insurance is the plan type. Here are the 4 most common types of plans:

HMO: An HMO is a health maintenance organization. With an HMO, you choose a primary care doctor.

If you need to see a specialist, you typically need to get a referral from your primary care provider. HMOs have a provider network. You may not be able to see providers outside of your network. If your plan allows you to see out-of-network providers, you will have to pay more.

PPO: A PPO is a preferred provider organization. It allows you more flexibility than an HMO. You typically don’t need a referral to see a specialist. You can see providers outside of the provider network, but you will pay a bit more.

EPO: An EPO is an exclusive provider organization. It combines aspects of an HMO and a PPO. You have the more restrictive network associated with an HMO.

If you see an out-of-network provider, you pay significantly more. You also have the freedom to see specialists without a referral.

POS: A POS is a point-of-service plan. You can see any provider in your network without getting a referral. If you want to see an out-of-network provider, you do need a referral.

Cosmetic surgery Pros and cons

Cosmetic surgery Pros and cons

chibueze uchegbu | February 6th, 2022

Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. Today, we bring to you the Cosmetic surgery Pros and cons.

It can be divided into two main categories: reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery.

Reconstructive surgery includes craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, microsurgery, and the treatment of burns.

While reconstructive surgery aims to reconstruct a part of the body or improve its functioning, cosmetic (or aesthetic) surgery aims at improving its appearance of it.

Cosmetic surgery Pros and cons

Cosmetic surgery is where a person chooses to have an operation, or invasive medical procedure, to change their physical appearance for cosmetic rather than medical reasons.

If you’ve always thought cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery were one in the same, you’re not alone.

A significant number of plastic surgeons choose to focus their practice on cosmetic surgery, and as such, the terms are often used interchangeably.

But this is not technically correct. Cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery are closely related specialties, but they are not the same.

Aesthetic surgery is a central component of plastic surgery and includes facial and body aesthetic surgery.

Plastic surgeons use cosmetic surgical principles in all reconstructive surgical procedures as well as isolated operations to improve overall appearance.

Reconstructive Surgery

It is performed to correct functional impairments caused by burns, traumatic injuries, such as facial bone fractures and breaks, congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palates or cleft lips, developmental abnormalities, infection and disease, cancer or tumors.

It is also performed to correct functional impairments caused by cancer or tumors. The goal of reconstructive plastic surgery is to restore both the appearance and the function of the patient’s body.

Tumor removal, laceration repair, maxillofacial surgery, scar revision, hand surgery, and breast reduction plasty are among the most frequently performed reconstructive operations in the United States.

As reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of reconstructive breast reductions performed on women declined by 4 percent in 2018 compared to the previous year. Breast reduction in men fell by 8% in 2018, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In 2018, a total of 57,535 procedures were carried out.

Other popular reconstructive surgical treatments include breast reconstruction following a mastectomy for cancer treatment, cleft lip and palate surgery, contracture surgery for burn survivors, and the creation of a new outer ear in cases where one was born without one.

Microsurgery is used by plastic surgeons to transplant tissue for the purpose of covering a defect when no local tissue is available.

Stapling blood vessels as small as 1 to 2 millimeters in diameter and suturing them to other arteries and veins can be used to remove free flaps of skin, muscle, bone, or fat from one location on the body and reattach them to a blood supply at a different location on the body.

Types of Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

There are different types of cosmetic surgery procedures, and they are;

  • Breast Enhancement: Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, Breast Reduction
  • Facial Contouring: Rhinoplasty, Chin, or Cheek Enhancement
  • Facial Rejuvenation: Facelift, Eyelid Lift, Neck Lift, Brow Lift
  • Body Contouring: Tummy Tuck, Liposuction, Gynecomastia Treatment
  • Skin Rejuvenation: Laser Resurfacing, Filler Treatments

Breast Enhancement

  • Breast augmentation

Sometimes referred to as a “breast aug” or “boob job” by patients, involves using breast implants or fat transfer to increase the size of your breasts.

This procedure can also restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy, achieve a more rounded breast shape or improve natural breast size asymmetry.

  • Breast Lift

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

  • Breast Reduction

Reduction mammoplasty (also breast reduction and reduction mammaplasty) is the plastic surgery procedure for reducing the size of large breasts.

In a breast reduction surgery for re-establishing a functional bust that is proportionate to the woman’s body, the critical corrective consideration is the tissue viability of the nipple–areola complex (NAC), to ensure the functional sensitivity and lactational capability of the breasts.

Facial Contouring

  • Rhinoplasty

Surgery that changes the shape of the nose. The motivation for rhinoplasty may be to change the appearance of the nose, improve breathing or both.

  • Chin Enhancement

Chin augmentation using surgical implants can alter the underlying structure of the face, providing better balance to the facial features.

The specific medical terms mentoplasty and genioplasty are used to refer to the reduction and addition of material to a patient’s chin.

  • Cheek Enhancement

The goal of cheek augmentation is to add volume or lift to the cheeks. Surgical options for enhancing the cheeks are fat grafting or cheek implants.

Facial Rejuvenation

  • Facelift

A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that lifts and tightens these facial tissues. A facelift can involve removing excess skin, smoothing out folds or wrinkles, and tightening facial tissue. It doesn’t include a brow or eye lift, although these might be done at the same time.

pros and cons of cosmetic surgery

Dr. Cat plastic surgery

  • Eyelid lift

Blepharoplasty is the plastic surgery operation for correcting defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the eyelids; and for aesthetically modifying the eye region of the face.

  • Neck Lift

Platysmaplasty, commonly referred to as a neck lift, is a form of cosmetic plastic surgery involving tightening and removing skin from the human neck.

Because it doesn’t often follow a predictable pattern of aging, neck lift surgery must be tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

  • Brow Lift

A forehead lift, also known as a browlift or browplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to elevate a drooping eyebrow that may obstruct vision and/or to remove the deep “worry” lines that run across the forehead.

Body Contouring

  • Tummy Tuck

Abdominoplasty or “tummy tuck” is a cosmetic surgery procedure used to make the abdomen thinner and more firm.

The surgery involves the removal of excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen in order to tighten the muscle and fascia of the abdominal wall.

  • Liposuction

Liposuction, or simply lipo, is a type of fat-removal procedure used in plastic surgery. Evidence does not support an effect on weight beyond a couple of months and does not appear to affect obesity-related problems. In the United States, liposuction is the most common cosmetic surgery.

It is a surgical procedure that uses a suction technique to remove fat from specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms or neck.

Liposuction also shapes (contours) these areas. Other names for liposuction include lipoplasty and body contouring.

  • Gynecomastia Treatment

Two gynecomastia surgery options are:

Liposuction.

This surgery removes breast fat but not the breast gland tissue itself.

Mastectomy.

This type of surgery removes the breast gland tissue. The surgery is often done using only small incisions. This less invasive type of surgery involves less recovery time.

Skin Rejuvenation

  • Laser Resurfacing

If aging, acne, or too much time in the sun has left your face with blotches, scars, wrinkles, or lines, laser skin resurfacing may help your skin look younger and healthier.

Laser skin resurfacing removes skin layer by layer with precision. The new skin cells that form during healing give the skin a tighter, younger looking surface. The procedure can be done alone or with other cosmetic surgeries on the face.

  • Filler Treatments

A filler treatment is a cosmetic dermatological procedure that is used to minimize the appearance of facial lines and wrinkles to restore a youthful look.

It is a great treatment option for those who want to eliminate the signs of aging but are not willing to undergo invasive treatments such as a traditional facelift.

Pros  and Cons

Like other Plastic surgery procedures, Cosmetic surgery comes with it’s advantages and disadvantages;

Here are the Pros and Cons of cosmetic surgery;

Pros of Cosmetic Surgery

Below are the benefits of cosmetic surgery;

  • Enhanced Appearance

The first and main benefit of cosmetic surgery is that it helps to align your natural appearance with your desired appearance.

If you want to undergo cosmetic surgery, it’s reasonable to assume that you are unhappy with some aspect(s) of your appearance, and you desperately want to change it. Once you do it, your appearance will change forever – resulting in an improved version of yourself.

  • Improved Physical Health

Another advantage of cosmetic surgery procedure is that in some cases it can enhance your physical health.

For example, a rhinoplasty surgery, not only will enhance the look and shape of your nose but may also help with respiratory issues that you may have.

The same goes with liposuction – allowing patients who undergo this surgery to be more physically active after its completion.

This, therefore, reduces the chances of developing issues such as an increased blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

  • Improved Confidence

By fixing and altering your appearance to suit your wishes, you will automatically have an improved self-esteem.

This does wonders for your social life and your mental health. Being confident in the way you look makes you feel better in all aspects of life.

  • Psychological Benefits

The previous point briefly touches on the suggestion that cosmetic surgery has psychological benefits. You are more inclined to socialise due to your improved state of mind regarding how you feel towards yourself.

Some people who are unsatisfied with their looks frequently struggle with anxiety and depression, which are both mental health problems. However, more often than not, these problems reduce or even disappear completely after cosmetic surgery procedures.

This is a huge bonus for many and is what encourages them to proceed with surgery. The positive psychological outcomes are worth it.

  • Pain is Over Estimated

Many people who consider cosmetic surgery are hesitant because of the fear of the ‘extreme pain’ that is often associated with cosmetic surgery.

While cosmetic surgery is not painless, it is not as painful as it is believed to be. This is true now more than ever because of the recent and ongoing advances in technology.

The procedures have been improved to reduce the feelings of pain – bringing a feeling of reassurance to many.

  • Permanent Results

Another key advantage to cosmetic surgery is that it produces results which often last a long time or are permanent.

This relieves any sort of worries of getting your ‘undesired’ looks back. However, you must keep in mind that you have to look after yourself after the procedures in order to make them more long-lasting.

For example, if you undergo a tummy tuck surgery – it’s high advised that you stick to a healthy and active lifestyle to maintain your results.

  • Easily Accessible

With more and more individual opting for cosmetic surgery, there are now many clinics that offer these services.

So, this means that it is relatively easy to find somewhere to do your procedure. Also, if you don’t want to do your surgery in the UK, there are many clinics aboard that you can easily access too. This is also known as ‘cosmetic tourism’ and has been on the rise in recent years.

Cons of Cosmetic Surgery

These are the disadvantages of cosmetic surgery;

  • Expense

It is not a secret that cosmetic surgeries are expensive. However, this factor makes cosmetic surgery not so ‘easily accessible’ to everyone, as not everyone obtains such funds.

It can be difficult saving up money towards cosmetic surgeries and people often take loans, which can lead to debt. Feel free to look at the cost of cosmetic surgery in South Korea.

  • Chance of Addiction

A grave disadvantage of cosmetic surgery is that some individuals get addicted to it. This has extreme effects on patients’ state of mind as they may increase the severity of or develop Body Dysmorphic Disorder, or BDD, (whereby they continuously find faults and flaws with their appearance.)

Individuals who are diagnosed with this believe that they can get rid of BDD through multiple cosmetic surgeries, but this is not the case. Surgery is not the correct treatment for this type of serious disorder.

  • Risk of Death

Although this isn’t common, it can happen during or after surgery. In most cases, this happens due to the reaction to anesthesia or because of your health history (a person with bad health is more likely to have complications during surgery than those who are in good health).

It is highly recommended that you take this factor into consideration, and although unlikely, it can occur. Making this a very serious risk of cosmetic surgery.

  • Doesn’t Always Meet Expectations

Another disadvantage of cosmetic surgery is that after the procedure, it’s not fully guaranteed that you will come out of the other end completely satisfied with the changes.

These adjustments made to your face or body may have been desirable before you had them, however, they may not look as you expected and fill you with regret.

So, you must always be sure exactly of what you want and do your research before committing to the surgery in order to avoid disappointment!

Conclusion

Cosmetic surgery won’t change your life. It won’t solve personal problems or make you look like someone else. But it may give you greater self-confidence and add to your sense of well-being.

Other skills and Requirements Phlebotomists should Possess

Beyond the certification and other formal education, some traits make one stand out as a phlebotomist; possessing these additional skills enhances the quality of service rendered during the dispensation of their duties.

A phlebotomist should be comfortable working with the needles because this is the major tool used on patients.

If the phlebotomist finds it hard to get comfortable with puncturing patients, this might put more anxiety into the patient, it might lead to several puncturing and even distort accuracy when trying to find the right point venipuncture.

Another skill that is pertinent in aiding the proper dispensation of phlebotomy is meticulosity. The phlebotomist must always be observant and ensure that full attention to detail is paid in all the processes of venipuncture.

The process of drawing blood samples has to be done gently and correctly by finding the right vein spot, also, the phlebotomist must ensure that the labeling process is correct to avoid mix up of diagnosis and in the ripple effect of wrong administration of treatment as the other medical professionals would trust and work with outputs from other team members.

Even the transportation of the samples must be done with correctness and safety. The case of corrupted samples has to be avoided to ensure that the actual result is gotten.

If any mistake occurs while labeling and transporting, it may cause serious adverse effects on the patients and if not quickly rectified could lead to more damages and in extreme cases, death.

Hence, a phlebotomist must possess the characteristic of observance, paying attention to all details and correctness. Striving for perfection should be a natural thing for a phlebotomist. These skills if not gotten naturally, can always be acquired.

The phlebotomist should also learn good relation and communication skills as they will be relating with patients whose blood needs to be drawn out.

It is psychologically imbalanced to draw blood out of a human, hence, phlebotomists need to learn how to communicate with patients in a soothing manner and put them at ease to allow their blood samples to be taken easily.

That is why in the course of the training or education in the approved institutions, psychology is offered to students so that they can know how to handle different patients in the right way to get the best result while dispensing their duties.

Team spirit is an essential skill for anyone who works in the health sector. This skill shouldn’t be lacking in a professional phlebotomist.

They must learn to dispense their duty while working hands in gloves with other medical practitioners in achieving the same goal of healing and recovery of patients. They often work under the supervision of the medical laboratory manager who transfers the test result or pints of blood getting to the doctors and nurse while giving treatments.

More so, aside from the privately-owned healthcare companies in Michigan, the government provides free and very low-cost healthcare services for families and individuals who can not afford to use the private healthcare marketplace.

Since 2013, more families opted for the free healthcare plan, and that has greatly reduced the number of residents without healthcare coverage in the state.

Health Insurance Michigan

The healthy state of Michigan has lots of companies working with the state to keep the residents fit and healthy.

Firstly, most of the privately-owned health insurance companies are now linking up with the state to make healthy living easier.

Again, these companies have reduced the price of health care coverage to the lowest for the benefit of the people.

Also, the bonuses that welcome you once you enroll can be very encouraging. Health insurance in Michigan is very beneficial because they are all working towards the good of the people.

However, before you choose a health insurance plan, you should be aware that your age determines the cost of health plans.

Meaning that, as you get older, your premium place becomes more expensive. Then you decide on your location because, even though it’s still the same state, prices of health care plans vary in counties.

So, from your county, you can now look around and pick an affordable and quality health care insurance plan. One that has benefits attached to it, a working coverage for you.

As you know, health plans are bought in metal tiers like Catastrophic, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Platinum.

Gold and platinum plans have higher and most expensive monthly premiums but the cheapest out-of-pocket expenses like deductibles.

Silver plans are perfect for you if you can’t afford the all high expensive plan. It has affordable premiums and out-of-pocket costs are very low.

Bronze and Catastrophic plans have the cheapest monthly health plan rates. This is the most preferable plan for you if you are still young and healthy. However, the catastrophic plan can not be accessible for anyone above thirty years.

In 2022, almost all the health insurance plans in the state of Michigan decreased by 2%.

By the way, you can still go for the short-term health plan but like the name, it will even vanish before you blink again and exhale.

In essence, short-term plans provide coverage for just one hundred and eighty days and in Michigan, renewal can be prohibited.

However, you have to enroll with a different health care provider in other to purchase another one. Again, short-term plans do not cover most of your health needs.

Free health insurance in Michigan

The state of Michigan provides free health care insurance plans for its residents through Medicaid and Medicare. However, you have to enroll and become eligible before you can access the services.

If you want to enroll in the government’s free health care plan, you have to go through HealthCare.gov. The plan can cover both families or individuals who are retired, unemployed or broke.

Medicaid

Medicaid is a health plan coverage jointly managed by the federal and state government. The program aims to provide free or very low-cost plans for low-income families and individuals. Medicaid is also for good for pregnant women, children, the elderly, and the disabled.

Firstly, for you to enjoy this free medical health care plan, you have to meet some requirements

It was created for children that are uninsured because of their family’s low income. Also, it has a $10 monthly premium for all the children in one family.

A child benefits from this program by having vision, dental and mental health services once they enroll.

Medicare

Medicare is another federal health insurance program for individuals of 65 and above. Also, Medicare was created for people with long-term disabilities.

Affordable Care Act

The Affordable Care Act(ACA) which is sometimes referred to as Obama Care came into existence in March 2010. This has helped lots of people to become more in tune with their health.

Also, it helped the state of Michigan record a very high drop in people without health care coverage. So, a lot of families and individuals that could not afford private health care insurance became and stayed insured.

With the affordable care act, you will be able to be in control of your health. Since they signed it into law, young adults can now remain on their parent’s plan until they turn twenty-six.

To conclude, health insurance companies in Michigan should be applauded for ensuring that they give their best to this state.

If not, how else can you explain the excellent and satisfying services they provide to the residents? How else will you explain the high average of insured people in the state even without any penalty for not being insured?

More so, the government of Michigan deserves an accolade too. This is for keeping a vibrant, health-conscious, and a healthy state. Like we said in the beginning, a healthy state is a wealthy state, and that state is Michigan.

pharmacist salary in South Africa

Pharmacist salary in South Africa

chibueze uchegbu | February 4th, 2022

Let us step into the pharmacy zone and find out what makes them an edge over other fine occupations. Come along let us discover how much is that pharmacist’s salary in South Africa.

You see, we all have come together and collectively agreed that studying pharmacy as a discipline is such a cool move.

But the question of every lip is how much exactly pharmacists make. Does their paycheck match the hype or just overrated?

Everyone still goes ahead to wonder if this whole stress of pharmacy school will be compensated in the salaries.

In places like South Africa where the cost of schooling is relatively high, it will not be an injustice to anyone if you decide to find out how much is a pharmacist salary in South Africa.

That is before you enroll yourself in a pharmacy school or advice, someone, to enroll.

Well, we are about to clear those concerns and give you a clear answer on how much a pharmacist takes home as the pay after a long whole month. So, stick around and let us indulge you.

Let us find out if it is actually a wise judgment to look into pharmacy schools in South Africa or just face another profitable direction.

Overview of Pharmacist salary in South Africa

According to findings, the truth of the matter is that there are levels to these things. For instance, the average salary of an experienced pharmacist who has been in the business for years will never be the same for a freshly out-of-school pharmacist.

Likewise, the average salary of a freshly graduated pharmacist will never be the same of a pharmacist intern.

Another thing to factor in before you make a final decision about a pharmacist salary in South Africa is the place of work.

A pharmacist working in a privately owned hospital and a pharmacist working in a government-owned hospital will never be the same.

The same goes for a private pharmaceutical company and a government-owned pharmaceutical company.

Meanwhile, let us break it down and call out the actual figures that these pharmacists take home in South Africa every month.

Now, a pharmacist with less than two years of experience earns 25,100 ZAR in a month.

While another pharmacist with at least a minimum of five to ten years of experience under his belt receives at least 44,500 ZAR in a month.

Then, another pharmacist that has bagged ten to fifteen years of experience under his belt takes home at least 55,100 ZAR.

Yet, another pharmacist with at least twenty years and above experience goes home monthly with the sum of 63,000 ZAR every month.

So, you decide if you love the profession alongside its payment or you prefer to admire it from a distance.

To be frank, pharmacist salary in South Africa shows to be largely dependent on years of experience. Well, you can still say that in all other professions too. In essence, you have to walk before you can run.

So this means that you should not allow the salary payments to be the only determining factor. That is if you want to choose pharmacy as a course for study. Or, you want to dust up your long-forgotten certificate to work as a pharmacist.

Pharmacist salary in Johannesburg

Now, it is important to know that all provinces are not the same or equal. Although they might be in the same country they still have their unique policies guiding them. This cuts across both jobs and every other aspect that make them a people.

For example, Eastern Cape and Limpopo are different provinces but they are under one country called South Africa.

Yet, they have different laws governing them and their way of life.

The same applies to jobs in each state. But remember, we are only speaking on the province level. So, this is not to forget that they all still have to surrender under the laws and authority of the South African Presidency at the federal level.

So, the pharmacist salary in Johannesburg will certainly not be the same in another province.

Arguably, they might be slightly similar but never the same because the work policies in each province differ from the other. For more clarification, let us go into the actual amount a pharmacist in Johannesburg goes home with at the end of every month.

Again, we are going to break it down according to their experience and how long a pharmacist has stayed on the job in Johannesburg.

Average pharmacist salary in South Africa based on work experience

To start with, the average monthly salary of a pharmacist with two years of experience and below is 27,400 ZAR.

  • Two years to five years of experience gets you 34,600 ZAR.
  • Five to ten years in the pharmacy joy will pay you 45,600 ZAR monthly.
  • Ten to fifteen years of pharmaceutical experience collects 53,700 ZAR.
  • Fifteen to twenty years on the pharmaceutical job gives you 59,400 ZAR.
  • Twenty years and above as a pharmacist will pay you 63,200 ZAR monthly.

According to the degree level, a pharmacist salary in Johannesburg with a Bachelor’s degree is 35,400 ZAR per month while a pharmacist in the same Johannesburg with a Master’s degree earns 54,100 ZAR per month.

However, we can not overlook work organizations or places of work.

A pharmacist salary in Johannesburg in the private sector is 30,200 ZAR while another pharmacist in the same Johannesburg working in the public sector earns 32,300 ZAR monthly.

Truly, humans with the same qualifications, capable of doing the same work should be paid an equal amount of salary but sadly, it is not so. A male pharmacist earns on an average 8% more than a female colleague.

So, when it comes down to provinces, the determining factors are years of experience, level of degree, and generally gender.

Speaking of our recent salary findings. Firstly, studying pharmacy as a course in South Africa speaks volumes of how intellectually bright you are already.

This is not to talk of the prestige you get to enjoy as a pharmacy student. It will be wise to do your thing if actually, you love pharmacy. Don’t ever be discouraged by the salary level or the gender pay gap in the industry.

Also, if you do not build your years of experience, how on earth would you want to earn as high as the gurus in the industry?

A saying goes thus “never forget the days of little beginnings” we all have those days but remember that the little beginnings will not last forever.

Types of Burs in dentistry

chibueze uchegbu | February 4th, 2022

There are many different types of burs available on the market, each of which has its own set of advantages. However, today, we will be focusing on dental burs.

Some are more effective in specific capacities than others, but making the right decisions is critical to the long-term financial success of your firm.

What are Burs?

Burs are a rotating counterpart of files, which cut linearly (hence their alternate name, rotary files). The burrs are also very similar to endmills and router bits in many aspects; the main difference is that endmills and router bits are typically controlled by the machine, whereas burrs are frequently handled freehand.

However, there is a significant amount of overlap in the application and toolpath control of these distinct classes of cutters, as well as in the results achieved by using them.

Endmills, for example, can be used in routers, and burrs, which are similar to endmills, can be used in milling by CNC or manual machine tools.

Burrs (the tools) are frequently employed in CNC machining centres for the removal of burrs (the small flakes of metal) that remain after the machining process is completed.

To ensure that the correct surface speed and cutting conditions are maintained, burrs are spun at a rapid rate (thousands or tens of thousands of RPM; often the top speed available on a given spindle). Unlike similar high-speed steel (HSS) cutters, the tungsten carbide cutters depicted in the image can operate at higher speeds while retaining their cutting edges.

Because the cutting edges of burrs are so thin, they can often be touched with a finger while spinning without cutting the skin, which flexes out of the way.

However, pinching or gripping them from two sides would not be recommended due to the risk of cutting the skin. Because hard metal or ceramic workpieces are unable to flex past the cutting edges, the tools must remove material from the workpieces.

It is because of this property that burrs are appropriate for use in dentistry, as the tool will crush the hard enamel of teeth while leaving soft oral tissues uninjured if the instrument should accidentally come into contact with them.

Dental Burs

Dental burs are tools that are used to cut hard tissues such as teeth or bones. Steel, stainless steel, tungsten carbide, and diamond grit are used in the construction of these tools.

In any dentistry catalogue, there can be a bewildering array of dental burs to choose from, but for basic veterinary use, only a few burs are required. Burs have two parts: a shank and an ahead.

They are small attachments that are used in conjunction with a dental handpiece to perform dental procedures.

There is a lot of value in them when it comes to preparing strategies for various dental treatments. There are several distinct types of dental burs that can be utilized in a variety of dental treatments.

Features of Dental Burs

Dental burs, which are used to cut hard tissues such as bone or tooth, have revolutionized the practice of dentistry and are now widely available.

They are often constructed of stainless steel, diamond grit or particles, and tungsten carbide, and they are attached to a dental drill that incorporates an air turbine to provide the necessary power. The dental bur was invented over 300 years ago and is still extensively used today.

It is made up of three parts: the head, the neck, and the shank of the dental bur. The blades are contained within the head, which produces cutting action through rotating motion. Because the bur has different properties, the blades are positioned at different degrees angles.

In the dental laboratory, dentists use this instrument to bore through tooth enamel, clean and remove plaque from the tooth’s surface, and dental technicians use this instrument to prepare dental materials. Before placing a filling, it is necessary to remove any decayed tooth material.

There are many different types of dental burs, each with a distinct form and size that is tailored for a specific function. They can rotate at speeds of up to 500,000 revolutions per minute (rpm).

They can be constructed wholly of tungsten carbide, or they can be made totally of steel and then coated with a strong coating, such as tungsten carbide coating, before being used. Burs come in a variety of forms and sizes to suit a wide range of applications, cutting and drilling capabilities.

Classification of Dental Burs

Below, we give a comprehensive classification and types of burs

Classifying dental burs according to the type of material;

The composition of dental burs is a crucial consideration. In the past, they were made of steel, but nowadays new materials have emerged that provide improved cutting qualities and durability. We can distinguish between two main types:

  • Tungsten carbide dental burs (carbide burs)
  • Diamond dental burs

Classifying dental burs according to their shank

This is the second simplest classification and the differences between the three types lie in their size, the speed at which they can work and their functions. There are:

  • Turbine dental burs

Undoubtedly the fastest rotary instrument calls for a dental bur with special features. The end is exposed and the diameter of the shank is 1.6 mm.

They are also known as high rotation burs, high-speed burs or FG burs (Friction Grip). Additionally, referred to by the acronyms FGM (Friction Grip Mini) or FGL (Friction Grip Long) according to their shank length.

  • Contra-angle dental burs

Their diameter is 2.35 mm and commonly you’ll see a notch at the non-active end. They are also known as RA burs (Right Angle), CA burs or simply low-speed burs.

  • Handpiece burs

Like the contra-angle burs, the shank diameter is also 2.35 mm, but it is a considerably longer bur. It is also known as an HP bur or bur for straight dental handpieces.

Classifying dental burs according to their shape

There are so many of them! They are named after their similarities to other, more everyday, objects. Here are just a few:

  • Ball burs

Perhaps the most common of all, they are used to open cavities or create retentions in dental surgery and also to create grooves for prosthetics. They are also useful for opening and shaping the pulp chamber after pulpotomy.

  • Cylindrical burs

There are flat-tipped, round-tipped and pointed burs, each designed for a particular purpose. For example, the flat-tipped cylindrical bur is used for shaping the chamfer in ceramic crown preparations.

  • Conical burs

There are rounded and flat-tipped burs. The latter, for example, is used for inlay preparations or for chamfering and counter-chamfering the finishing line, among other uses.

  • Inverted Cone burs

Among other applications, its uses include the opening of cavities or creating retentions (undercuts) in dental surgery. It can also be used to form the occlusal surface.

  • Flame burs

It’s the ideal shape to allow a delicate definition of the proximal or buccolingual walls in surgery or prosthetics.

  • Wheel Bur

This is often used to create mechanical retentions, deep cuts and occlusal shapes

Classification of dental burs according to head diameter

This is the most concise classification of dental burs. The size of the bur is determined by the diameter of the active part of the bur and there are many, many different sizes.

Now that we know these 5 classifications of dental burs, it should be really easy to understand ISO coding. This coding allows us to speak the same language when choosing a dental bur from various manufacturers.

Classifying dental burs according to their grit size

The grit size of dental burs determines how aggressively they can erode the tooth. The coloured ring, which is usually found on the neck of the bur, determines the coarseness of the grain.

This coding is standardised by the ISO regulatory and the most common colours are:

  • White: Superfine
  • Yellow: Extra fine
  • Red: Fine
  • Blue: Standard
  • Green: Coarse
  • Black: Super Coarse

Major Types of Burs and their uses

Dental burs are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate the numerous dental procedures that a dental clinic provides.

Diamond burs and carbide burs are the two most prevalent types of burs that are used nowadays.

The following is a list of the many dental burs and their applications.

Diamond Burs

Using this form of dental bur, you can polish your teeth and cut smoothly when you need to. They are crafted from diamond, which is the world’s most difficult substance to work with.

During dental surgery, diamond burs are employed when high precision is necessary. The lifespan of diamond burs is significantly longer than that of any man-made material, making this form of dental bur extremely long-lasting and reliable.

Steel burs

This type of dental bur is used to prepare a tooth for cavity treatments. In comparison to other dental burs like diamond burs and ceramic burs, steel burs tend to be less durable and break more easily.

Ceramic burs

This type of dental bur does not heat up as much as other dental burs because ceramic does not conduct as much heat. This type of dental bur is used to adjust acrylic pieces that are used in dental procedures.

Carbide Burs

Tungsten carbide is used in the production of these burs. In comparison to steel, it is three times stiffer.

Because it is composed of such a long-lasting material, it can maintain its sharpness for an extended period, making it a great cutting instrument.

Carbide burs, which are similar to diamond burs in appearance, are available in a range of forms. The perforations made in the bur’s head allow them to be excellent cutting devices while producing the least amount of debris possible.

In terms of removing metal-based restorations, as well as trimming and polishing macro-filled and hybrid composites, carbide burs are more convenient to use.

These are used to prepare teeth for dental fillings and to form bones before undergoing additional treatments. They can also be used to remove old fillings from the teeth.

Cross-cut Tapered Fissure

Because cross-cut burs have more cuts in the blade than other types of burs, they provide a more efficient cutting action while generating less trash.

Fissure burs with a tapered crosscut are used for sectioning multi-rooted teeth and lowering the height of the crown.

Conclusion

The world of dental burs is very broad and it doesn’t end here, there are also other types of burs that are designed for specific dental procedures, for example:

Dental laboratory burs

In this category, there is a wide variety of dental laboratory burs designed for working on metal, plaster, ceramics, acrylics, etc.

Dental and maxillofacial surgery burst

There is a wide variety of burs for different surgical actions, e.g. bone-cutting burs, alveolar ridge expansion burs, sinus lift burs, dental implantology burs, etc.

Invisalign Vs Braces Pros And Cons

Invisalign Vs Braces Pros And Cons

chibueze uchegbu | February 3rd, 2022

Today, we will look at Invisalign Vs Braces Pros and Cons and the clever approaches to making the right decision.

You want to straighten your teeth but can’t decide between braces and Invisalign.  Do your homework, ask questions, and make an informed decision with your orthodontist’s support.

Because Invisalign isn’t always the ideal solution for every patient, it’s important to receive expert guidance from your Orthodontist.

Overview of Invisalign Vs Braces Pros And Cons

This post compares Invisalign and braces to help you make an informed choice.

Braces are generally metal and affixed to the outside of the teeth, however, increasingly ceramic and lingual (behind the teeth) braces are available. Metal wires and rubber bands are attached to brackets to remedy orthodontic issues.

Invisalign employs clear plastic aligners. A 3D scan of the mouth customizes the aligners for each patient. A set of custom aligners is then produced to gently shift the teeth into place.

The Pros of Invisalign

Invisalign has several benefits, the most notable of which are as follows:

  • Invisalign Has a More Attractive Appearance

The most significant advantage of Invisalign is that the retainers are nearly undetectable. Adult patients appreciate the fact that their coworkers and clients are unaware that they are getting orthodontic treatment. Self-conscious teens do as well.

When you use Invisalign, you won’t have to deal with others making fun of your new braces for a while.

You won’t have to be concerned about your grin in photographs because all that will be seen in photographs is the growth of your ever-improving smile over time.

  • You can take the aligners out to eat if you want to.

Patients frequently inquire as to whether they are required to wear Invisalign at all times. To achieve the optimum results, Invisalign must be worn for 20 – 22 hours each day, which means you can remove your aligners when you are eating your meal.

This means that you won’t have to make any changes to your diet or eating habits. Many people find it difficult or uncomfortable to eat certain types of meals while wearing braces.

  • Brushing and flossing your teeth is now much simpler

In addition to removing your Invisalign retainers during eating and drinking, you will also remove them when brushing your teeth.

Because there is nothing on your teeth to be concerned about, you can continue cleaning and flossing as you normally would.

  • There will be fewer consultations required

When you use Invisalign, the majority of the orthodontist’s work is completed before you even put on your aligners.

A 3D image of your teeth is utilized to create all of the personalized retainers that are created in a laboratory. According to your orthodontist’s instructions, you should change the multiple sets of retainers.

Because there is no need to return to the orthodontic office for adjustments, visits to the office are limited to a bare minimum to monitor progress. With fewer trips to the orthodontist, you’ll spend less time away from work.

  • Wearing It Is A Pleasure

Are you wondering if braces or Invisalign are more painful than traditional braces? Discomfort and pain might be experienced when moving teeth with Invisalign, just as they would with traditional braces.

On the other hand, Invisalign is associated with fewer oral and gum disorders. Invisalign retainers are composed of a special plastic that is customized to each patient’s mouth, so there are often no incisions on the inside of the cheeks or salt washes to deal with, as there are with traditional braces.

The Cons of Invisalign

Invisalign has numerous drawbacks to consider:

  • Constraints for Patients

Removing your aligners has both pros and cons. You won’t wear your aligners for the mandatory 22 hours if you don’t put them back in after eating or brushing. The aligners may not work as well if they aren’t worn as long. The main reason Invisalign therapy fails is patient non-compliance with wearing the aligners.

  • Changing your aligners can be inconvenient.

Aside from water, aligners must be removed before eating. When out in public, remove your aligners quietly and don’t lose them.

Brush your teeth before replacing your aligners. Food particles can obstruct tooth movement and stain aligners. You’re also more prone to cavities and poor breath.

  • Cost

“Is it cheaper to have braces or Invisalign?” Because of developments in 3D scanning technology and the use of flexible materials, Invisalign aligners can be as cheap as braces.

Some treatment is difficult or impossible with Invisalign alone, therefore your Orthodontist may suggest finishing tooth placements with braces, which can be more expensive. Often likened to Invisalign, lingual (inside) braces are practically unnoticeable. Lingual braces, like Invisalign, are entirely customized and therefore more expensive.

Pros of Braces

Traditional braces, as well as the more recent lingual braces, have numerous advantages. Braces have several advantages, including the following:

  • All Treatments are suitable for this product.

It makes no difference how difficult your case is when you have braces. You may have several dental and facial concerns that need to be addressed – braces can be used to repair each one so that you can conclude therapy with a beautiful smile.

Braces work by pulling the teeth into place with the help of anchors and an archwire. In terms of shifting teeth into a desirable position, they are the most effective treatment option available today.

  • It is possible to achieve a flawless outcome.

Braces are a more effective treatment option than Invisalign. Braces provide extra stress to the teeth to shift them into the desired position. Because of the limitations of Invisalign, only a limited amount of teeth can be shifted at a time.

  • Different Types of Braces to Select From

Metal brackets and wires are no longer the only types of braces available. Lingual braces and ceramic braces are now available to patients, allowing them to have braces that are less apparent. If the appearance of metal braces is a concern for you, it is feasible to reap the benefits of braces while avoiding the metal appearance.

  • Treatment Time that is shorter

Remember to ask yourself this question: Which treatment method is more efficient: braces or Invisalign? In general, when it comes to filling gaps and aligning teeth, braces can be more effective than Invisalign in terms of treatment time.

Because many people prefer to get their orthodontic treatment completed as quickly as possible, the speed of treatment might be an important consideration.

Furthermore, the ability and experience of the specialized Orthodontist can help to ensure that treatment periods are consistently shorter.

Cons of Braces

Of course, braces have some drawbacks:

  • Brace Aesthetics

Traditional braces aren’t for everyone. They fear being judged by others for their appearance.

  • Flossing

Brushing and flossing with braces is more challenging. Plaque buildup around braces can cause discoloration and deterioration if not cleaned properly. Follow your orthodontist’s advice on how to brush and floss properly while wearing braces.

  • Diet and Nutrition

Food and drink must be consumed with caution while wearing braces. Hard and sticky foods can damage an arch wire or dislodge a bracket from a tooth. The braces will not work until the breakage is repaired. Breakages can lengthen treatment time.

  • Consultations

Braces require more frequent appointments to the orthodontist to monitor progress and modify them. Every month, your orthodontist will assess your teeth’s progress and make adjustments to keep them moving in the right direction.

Patients visit the operation every two months because Invisalign aligners are pre-made and may be replaced without an orthodontist.

Invisalign Vs Braces which is Faster

Because the aligner trays are modified throughout the course of therapy, Invisalign is typically more efficient than braces.

Every few weeks, you will return to the office to have new aligners custom-made for your specific needs and specifications.

During treatment, your aligners will alter to ensure that they are always functioning to improve the appearance of your teeth. Invisalign is a clear alternative to traditional braces that can straighten your teeth more quickly.

The majority of patients are done with therapy in one to two years, but traditional braces can take up to three years to produce meaningful improvements in some cases.

As a result, patients find Invisalign to be a more convenient and faster alternative to traditional orthodontic treatment for those seeking a beautiful, faultless smile.

Invisible Braces Vs Metal Braces

Straight teeth and a renewed smile may no longer be required to be achieved through the use of unsightly wire and bracket braces in the mouth.

Invisible Braces

Invisible braces, which improve self-esteem and physical confidence, are an esthetic and barely noticeable alternative to traditional wire/bracket braces that are used to straighten teeth.

However, while invisible braces may not be appropriate for some misalignment situations or complex bite abnormalities that are better handled by traditional orthodontics, invisible braces can be used to treat the conditions listed below:

  • Excessive biting or over jetting
  • Teeth that are too close together or too far apart
  • crooked Teeth

Because they are meant for adults and older adolescents, invisible braces are not indicated when baby teeth are still present. Traditional metal braces with brackets and wires on the front of the teeth will be required for children and younger teenagers who have orthodontic difficulties.

Only your dentist or orthodontist, however, can evaluate whether or not you are a candidate. Adults are the primary target of this alternative treatment since it necessitates absolute and uncompromising participation; the “trays” are worn for 22 hours each day and should not be forgotten or lost.

Metal Braces

Traditional braces are more effective at addressing extreme overcrowding than other solutions such as transparent braces or Invisalign aligners, and they are also less expensive than these alternatives.

Their use allows your orthodontist to reposition the teeth in modest amounts at a time, giving him the control he requires.

The most significant disadvantage of traditional braces is the metallic appearance of the mouth. While less noticeable orthodontics such as Invisalign may appear to be a better option for those who are self-conscious about their appearance, today’s braces are more aesthetically pleasing than they were in previous years, with a variety of colors options for both the brackets and the elastics to choose from.

Wearing these types of braces also eliminates the possibility of misplacing your aligners at any point during your treatment.

Invisible Braces for Adults

Even if you didn’t have braces as a child and find yourself wanting or needing adjustments again, you may be an excellent candidate for invisible braces.

Invisible braces, also known as clear aligners, work in a similar way to traditional metal braces in that they gradually adjust the position of your teeth over time.

Clear plastic aligners, which are less apparent than metal braces because they fit securely around your teeth, are used to straighten teeth.

The discreet nature of transparent aligners makes them particularly appealing to adults who may be self-conscious about metal braces, which are typically associated with children.

The majority of aligners are worn throughout the day for at least 20 hours and are only removed for eating and brushing.

When it comes to wearing your aligners in public, there are night-only solutions available, which include wearing them only at night and while you sleep for at least 10 hours.

Conclusion

The period of therapy is determined by your specific situation as well as the sort of invisible braces you are using.

Braces are typically worn for 18 to 24 months, though they may be required to be worn for a longer period.

Metal braces are the most effective since they are constructed of the strongest materials. Ceramic braces, while stronger and more attractive than metal braces, require a longer time to complete since they are not as sturdy as metal braces. Inside braces may also require more time to be effective than outside braces.
